    Laptop dying

A few days ago my laptop, which has really never been 100%, has booted up with a black screen telling me to to type F1 citing an imminent hard disk failure and then F10 for a hard-disk check . . . but I can't even get into the screen for an F10 . . .

I've backed up most of my files but it is the Outlook files I am worried about, can't seem to export them for some reason.

Piece of shit is a Compaq Presario V3000 running Vista . . .

Time for an Apple when the budget permits . . . or does anyone have a suggestion for a good pc laptop?

(I've had IBMs - loved them but not keen on the new owners)
    (Had Viso - excellent . . . but expensive)

But in a few days I going to buy an Apple just to keep Butterfly happy, cant have he runs out of targets for his anti Apple syndrome, and it's going to be funny to see who I will end up thinking is right over my time with the new machine, the anti wing or the pro wing.

Get an Apple and can run windoz on it as well as Apple OS, best of both worlds.

I would at least have a repairman look at it before tossing it in the garbage. Repairs are quite inexpensive here and some of the repair people in Tucom or Pantip are quite clever. You can also take the hard drive out of your old computer, mount it in a hard drive box that costs about 300 baht and plug it into the USB port on your new computer allowing you to access some of your files if your old hard drive is any good at all.
If you buy a new one, I love my Sony Vaio. In fact, I've never had a Sony product that was not good.

Assuming you can get your computer to boot. Go here.

    C:\Documents and Settings\computer\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Copy Outlook.pst file and save on backup media. If you lose Outlook or it's data, move the Outlook.pst file back into C:\Documents and Settings\computer\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook, and your good to go.

This works on XP but may be a different folder in Vista. If you can't find it in Vista do a search "*.pst".

Take it to Imbi Plaza. They should be able to sort it out.

replace the hard drive - about a 5 minute job with a phillips head screwdriver - and then put XP pro on your machine ( make sure drivers are availaible on the compaq website though ) - then put your old hard drive in an external USB case so you can copy back the needed files , then nuke the old drive.
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Buy from newegg.com and use a parcel forwarder or a friend in the states. Blow up deals on laptops right now.

Good choice, you will be satisfied - and you can move your Windows files over as well.

I'd suggest removing the hard drive from the laptop, mounting it in an external firewire or USB case, and extracting your data to whatever new laptop you end up getting.

Chances are your data is fine - if you allowed your Outlook PST files to grow larger than 2GB, though, your chances diminish.

If you can buy via the USA, you can find MacBooks for $800, and MacBook Pro systems for $1,450.

oh please do, can't wait for a new thread about how your Mac fucked up and it's dead and you need to buy a new one

fucking comedy material I tell you, and I will be proven right, once more.

Quack Quack without shame will come back and claim some kind of Apple victory or will start lashing at you for being such a dumb user and not respect the mac and basically being at fault for breaking it

larvidchr seems like a normal person, so I doubt he will have of your self-caused problems.
