    IT Dummy needs help

I have just had my hard drive crash and had to replace it. It was so badly messed up, the local repair shop could not recover anything from it.

Starting from scratch is a pain but is there a way of extracting any of the lost pics/music/docs that had not been backed up?

I will be back in UK in October so maybe there is a specialist there who someone knows of?

    Any advice appreciated

if it's hardware crash, it has to go to that company in the US, expensive service, from 100 EUROS to 1,000 EUROS if I remember correctly

it depends on what the crash did , and then what the "local repair shop" did.

if the drive still spun and was recognised by BIOS there is/was a chance

Sorry for your hard drive crash ... but I have only one word to say: backup. Even double backup on 2 different external hard drives. Backup the system and any other files you wouldn't want to lose.

Thanks Wallai, as if i had not kicked myself hard enough already. Thanks for your 20/20 hindsight.

Cheers Baldrick. Not sure about the thai explanation for the crash. I do not know how to say "your hard drive is fucked" in thai. Will get someone to play with it when i go back in Oct.

When you say "crash", what do you actually mean? "disk unreadable/corrupt"? message and no boot up?
With data recovery, all things are possible... depending on how much you are willing to pay.

You can get a hard drive to USB adaptor and make an "image", .iso file... maybe scour nerdy forums for step by step help...

Could not get a start up screen. Got one in the shop saying press F for boot or F10 for start up options.

This led to screens which did not respond.
Then it died again and could not be restarted.

Thanks anyway. I will look into the usb hard drive adaptor.

Boot up using a linux disc, ie ubuntu, transfer whatever you can get off the damaged drive to an another drive or storage device.

Cheers DD. I will get someone to re-install the old drive and try it.

You mean you only see black screens with white text?

Does it say anything about "media failure check cable"?

Definitely use Ubuntu... you'll never look back (well unless your company forces you to use Shitdows).

Stick it in an external caddy, whack it a ziplock plastic bag and put it in the freezer over night, pull from freezer and plug into PC usd port, sometimes this will allow you to recover some data from it.

Guy at Panthip Ngamwongwang, at a shop called M2 Power, has "HARDDISK DATA RECOVERY" in English amongst all the Thai on the business card he gave me when he whizzed my shattered laptop back into working condition for 400 Baht last week.

Thanks Nemo, Fondles, mao and DD for all your help and suggestions.

It is a laptop and i have already replaced the hard drive. I have the original drive, which i hope to be able to extract/save something from esp family pictures.
