A bit of advice on Admin rights on a wireless network?

    Wireless networks!
Ok, here is my current situation, I have Broadband modem in bridged mode, connected to the DSL line - in front of that I have a DLink Dir 615 wireless

router. (The router does all the ppoe log in and whatever) This is working fine.

I set this up a few weeks back.

Now, in the past week I bought a second computer with wireless, and it connects perfectly via the router to the internet.

The problems I seem to be having are connecting 100% with admin rights to the second PC.

We are able to connect the two coms, but only by mutual sharing of directories - I want to be able to connect to the 2nd PC with full admin rights to install/remove software, install antivirus etc. but currently am limitied to access to bits of C\ and D\ (I had to go on to the 2nd computer and enable "sharing" but I only seem to get the actual drives, not the "My Computer" or "Desktop"

1: I worry if I use the usual Microsoft "Harry Fucking Potter" Wizard - I will lose all connectivity.

2:The Network " Harry Potter Wizard" ( that I printed out to "store in a safe place tells me a complete load of shite - the WEP key is not what was

entered the network SSID is wrong - for example - my network was originally set up with the SSID as Home Network - Microshit prints out the settings

    as "my network"

The WEP code bares no resemblance to the WEP code I entered to enable the other PC.

So I am a bit worried about initiallising any of their so called "WIZARDS" as from past experiences they tend to be useless!

The last thing I want is to lose any current connections, as it was a struggle ( for the mentaly impaired to get this far)

We managed to get the printer sharing working tonight, but that was only after the "Wizard - bless him" seemed to need a directory on my machine to be

shared - being a fucking wizard he didn't tell me this - it was a kind of telepathy! and we spent an hour trying to get this Wizard to simply "BROWSE"

for the printer - but fucv he wanted the name address lock stock and two smoking barrels to simply begin his "Wizardry"

So the situation is I have my PC working hunky Dory (winxp 32 bit) router/modem fantastic - now I need to get complete control over the 2nd computer,

without having to start from point A -any ideas?

Microshit recommended running another one of their traiterous "Wizards" but frankly from past experience - these buggers do a lot more harm than good.

I would be grateful for the following!

A: Changing the 2nd PC "name" from Toyota to something a bit more well....
B: Changing the settings on the 2nd PC to "HOME NETWORK" rather than "my network"
C: confirming the SSID /WEP KEY without having to reset anything other than the 2nd PC - i.e. Fucking with Router/Modem is not an option!
D:Gaining complete control over the admin of the 2nd PC - I don't want 8 year olds looking at the shit I read!

E:If I can do this with the "Wizard of Shit" provided by Microsoft - then well and good, without destroying my current "working connection" then fine

    - but I doubt it!

Baldrick - sorry -but your name springs to mind!!

    ok

    controlling the second desktop
go and get realVNC ( VNC = Virtual Network Computing , aka remote desktop control of another computer )

    RealVNC - Download VNC software

get the top one , win32 exe

install the server on the computer you want to control
in its options , set it to use the admin account , set it to run as a service , set a password and if the computer has a firewall set it to accept connection on port 5900 or if it is win firewall set VNC server as an exception

on your computer you wish to use to control the other computer install just VNC viewer

start VNC viewer ,enter the IP address of the other computer , password and you will be presented with a window that is the other desktop and you can use the mouse and keyboard in it as if you were sitting in front of it.

will get to your wifi problem soonish
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Thanks Baldrick - actually (like the video streaming) I was pissing up the wrong tree - everything I needed to get a hold of was done by using the Windows Remote Desktop - now I can run Anti Virus etc easily!

Sort of going the long way around for nothing!
But I will look up that link you gave me, (I was using Network Magic, that came bundled with the Router setup - but it seemed to slow everything down)

    wifi

SSID - a name for your access point - broadcast enable/disable to allow/disallow people to see it with the basic wireless networking utilities they have

channel - FCC ( usa and other sheep ), ch 1 to ch 11 - ETSI ( euro , sing , aust ) ch 1 -ch 13, jap ch 1 - 14 - for the AP to get the extra channels it needs it location set for the zone required or its firmware to be flashed with one from the zone required - for computer wifi cards under windoze you need to set your location.

    encryption

    WEP - for suckers
    WPA - better
    WPA2 - better still
TKIP - ok , but in the process of being compromised
    AES - no know compromises

PSK = pre shared key , what you will be using as if you are reading this you will not be running a radius server.

    get a 63 A/N key from here https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

copy and paste the key into a text file , maybe the one where you have recorded the MAC addresses of all your network interface devices - wifi , ethernet , bluetooth etc

    think logically

You lost me with some of that - not surprising since I've never had awireless router or set up a network before in my life!

    SSID - no problem, sorted.
Channel - ?? If you mean for the router, then mine is on auto scan.
    Encryption - Yes I am a sucker - WEP!

What is the PSK? and the A/N Key?

    Cheers!

By the way - I think I got a virus yesterday from simply browsing a web page - I got a virus alert, and the PC started running at 100% CPU load, I found a suspect file in the processes in task manager, but when I tried to find any info on google etc. I got zilch! however, after stopping it and deleting it, everything went back to normal - couldn't find any info on it tho... "hdmpmejj.exe" ????

As always - thanks for your help! (Actually I am getting a bit big headed actually getting the damn thing running - my son thinks I am God! (I won't tell him yet where I get all the help!)

How much of a step is it up from WINXP? and what sort of compatibility does it have with Microshit products?

Will it run programs like bit torrent, firefox etc

Pardon the "dumb" questions but I really no zich about it - but if it is worth the effort, then I am willing to give it a go!

    Thanks.

^ You can give it a try without installing anything.

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Many other brands (distribution) available, but Ubuntu is now the most popular one with newbies.

Firefox, torrents will work but you'll have to forget Windows apps and games. Even if there is some kind of "emulators" to run Windows apps on Linux, few apps are working smoothly.

OK, will have a look, thanks - not sure this is going to be for me though if it doesn't run things like Word/Excel - How easy is it to install it as a second operating system? That may be the way for me to go.

What if they copy your password and key? Seems to me like you are giving that site acsess to your own encryption? Maybe I am missing the point?
