    Question AV Problems

My 'free' anti virus expired a couple of days ago, Norton Security Online. I took the opportunity to uninstall it, which was a right pain, I had to download an uninstall utility from Symantec to get rid of it.

I then downloaded and installed AVG free. It wouldn't update, in fact my internet failed to connect to any website with various errors depending on the browser being used:

    Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error.

Navigation to the webpage was canceled

•The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
•The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
•There might be a typing error in the address.
•If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

    Connection Interrupted
    The document contains no data.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

I tried an IP address to bypass DNS, poked around in my host file, tried a TCPIP reset, and a NETSH command. Nothing worked. I then went back to a system restore point and it all worked again.

Uninstalled Norton again. Browser worked, installed AVG, browser failed, restored again. Uninstalled Norton, installed AVAST! this time, browser wouldn't work, uninstalled AVAST!, browser worked. Installed AVG (prefer it to AVAST!) ran a full system scan. Nothing found, no browser, uninstalled, browser works again.

So here I am with no antivirus or no internet, don't really need an AV if I don't have an internet

    Any ideas anyone?

Download Malwarebytes.org also. With AVG, Spybot and Malwarebytes, you should have no problems after you get going.

Also, try uninstalling your browser, then installing AVG, then reinstalling your browser.

Red, if you are still having problems,
    1. Restore
    2. Download to your desktop: AVG, SpyBot, Malwarebytes.
    3. Disconnect internet.
    4. Uninstall Norton
    5. Install new software.
    6. Run scans.
    7. THEN reconnect to the internet and update software.
    Good Luck.

kapersky found something which I deleted but was so slow I gave up on it.
malawarebytes found 18 low risk adaware thingys
Avira found a couple of low risk things, but my browser still works.

think I'll leave it at that, thanks guys, greens all round (apart from dd, given too much)

I had similar problems with Norton's many years ago. Uninstalled it and nothing internet related worked, reinstalled again and everything worked fine. I don't know what Norton's does to your computer but it fucks it up right royally when you uninstall it.

Needless to say I've never used it again and would never recommend it. Did a clean reinstall of Windows to make sure it was gone for good.

Maybe he wants a computer that is user-friendly and not an overpriced toy?

    Hee hee.

Norton is an over bearing piece of crap. I bought a piece of hardware and the tech said it basically wouldn't work unless I got rid of Norton which I did and he gave me a cracked copy of Nod32 which never gave me any trouble.

    Then I bought a Mac.

Download SUPERAntiSpyware from superantispyware (dot) com. Either the Free or Pro Trial Edition will work fine.

    Run the install.exe file.

    Select “Scan Your Computer.”

    Select “Perform Complete Scan.”

Follow the prompts to quarantine/remove the infected files.

Make sure to reboot following the scan.

^ I tried that and it was shit. Adaware & Spybot are much better.
