the fluorescent tube that backlights your display could be failing - no big deal to get replaced.

software wise , you usually can dim your display to save battery power - so download your manual and check in it how to adjust monitor brightness and make sure it is on full

my dell with xp - right click on desktop , properties , settings , advanced , intel mobile graphics - then I can adjust screen brightness
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Gos, my laptop has a 'Fn' key on the botton left side of the keyboard. On the right, second vertical row in, there are 2 keys, actually the up and down keys, that you have to use with the Fn key to adjust the brightness, on my Dell anyway. I hope that helps.

You might want to try the power management settings as per baldrick. Make sure they are not set for "low power".
