    Recovery Drive

I have Windows fekin Vista on one comp. Obviously some booboos happening -- running really slow mostly. I reckon it's the D drive (about 7.7GB with only 900MB free). Can't get in there to check. I tried to run disc cleanup and defrag (set for weekly runs) and they're now missing from system tools.

Should I just copy all my files and reset the fecker to factory settings? I don't have the geek smarts you guys have.

    Please help.
    Love,
    Jettie

If you can copy some files off the D drive you'll get enough free space on it that you run a defrag on it. Can't remember how much free space you need on a drive on windows to use the windows defrag, maybe about 10%.

I don't know how you lost the defrag tools????? But if you double click on My Computer => right click on D drive => Properties => Tools Tab, you'll find them there.

Thanks, PB. Found the defrag there. It's set for a weekly run, but doing it again now.

can you just buy a new hard drive ? more space , newer etc

pull the old drive out , and put it in an external usb caddy and put the new HD in = 100USD + 10 mins and 5-8 phillips head screws

upgrade to winxp pro - though you have to check to see if your laptop supports the newer operating system.

install xp , enjoy a new fast responsive system and copy the files ypu need from the external usb to your laptop , and when you have all you need you can then wipe the external and have a spare portable drive.
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

If the need for the computer s urgent, I would opt for XP. Just bought one myself a few weeks back and had XP installed rather than Vista.

If you wait for Windows 7 will be at least October 2009 and likely longer before the initial release. Once released, if history is any indicator, it will have the usual problems all of MS's new release software.

Others here will argue this but opting for XP is the safe way to go. It is proven and all the "fixes" have been pretty well made by MS.

I was hoping to install it this weekend. Still have to wait. Maybe Windows 7 will be released next week and I can give that a go instead.

how many years of cruft inhabit the xp laptop

you can use XPlite and your XP disk to create an XP install disk with all the add on rubbish removed and even the latest drivers and service packs - get your XP using only 80meg of ram in the beginning

blackviper's list and explanation of services is a good place to start looking at what services you need to have running on your machine.

I am waiting for a Release Candidate Version coming out in May. That would be free and rumour has it it will run until the first full version will come out and you can install the full version over it without the need of a new install.

I will go that way as I will need my Laptop in june and don't want to buy an old version now, unless they come out with a Vista plus free upgrade to 7. The last beta worked fine with the new laptop so will hopefully the Release Candidate version.

I have high hopes that Windows 7 will be ok if history serves. Win 95 was crap, Win98 was fine, at least the SE. If that works out I have successfully skipped Vista.

I think the early adopters of win7 are going to be disappointed.

they will be shocked when they find it is not the same as the betas and release candidates and the DRM that msoft will have added will be pure hell until it gets tamed by a service pack or 2.

Maybe but what should I do? So far I have used Win XP and now I need an OS for my laptop. I don't want to buy another XP and I don't want to buy Vista now.
I will not need much of the new gimmicks initially and when I may need them hopefully the bugs will be gone.

So I go with Windows 7. It will be officially out for the general public to use on May 5 with a free Release Candidate version. If you want you can get it now somewhere on the net.

If anybody is interested the keys released for the last Beta will be valid for the RC and are open in the net.

    The keys

The site is in german but that's not a problem for getting the keys.

When I search for %temp% (which I think the prob is) it shows stuff in my C drive apps, nothing in D. I cannae see any of the files or folders in D drive either. I feked up as I am using it as admin.
