All 9,416 of my photos have vanished

I opened up iPhoto and it is as empty as the day I bought the laptop. I'm not getting too upset about this because it saves me having to back them all up but the pain will come later, every time I think of an irreplaceable photo I wanted to use or see.

Please tell me they are hiding in some recovery file somewhere.

There were too many to backup - besides an external HD can be just as tempramental.

The search function is shit, it doesn't do anything - but I don't seem to have been freed of any space either so they must be somewhere.

The search function on those computers is awesome and one of my favourite tools compared to the IBM variety.

Files just don't disappear when you open the programme, stop being a knob and go and have a look before spurting your crap on TD.

Try MacExplorer, it will replace the Finder and that miserable Find function,

I worked 20min with the Mac today and I was going mad. How can people do any serious work with that machine ? everything is upside down and sideway. It's like operating a 1970 computer, completely useless.

All items and documentation that might be considered valuable to you, should have hardcopy duplicates. What have we become? Dependent on cyber-electronics.

Have you looked at the back of the couch? You`d be amazed what you can find there.

Have you tried to search your iPhoto Library with Spotlight ? There are your photos, in the "Originals" folder. Just type iPh or Ori in Spotlight and it should show you something like this.

It is obviously another advanced feature of the Mac which recognises that the user is incapable of critical analysis of his own work. The advent of digital media makes this a major problem as people now churn out thousands of images and save them all indiscriminately. Pre digital we were often saved by them not actually getting around to taking the films in for processing, or not having the cash to collect them. Now they are on hard drives and phone memory to bore friends and aquaintancies at the drop of a hat.

The Mac has an expert system, iSort, using advanced heuristic algorithms to grade and sort your photo collection automatically to reduce it to a manageable size. Unfortunately for you, it has classed yours as complete dross and assigned them to the bin.
