    Utorrent issue

Hi guys, I have been using utorrent for a while and it has worked quite well, I have been downloading from uknova.com and everything runs smoothly, but when i try to use other websites like btjunkie, piratebay etc the files dont want to download in the client, they go to a nice red status. Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it or can suggest an alternative client to use that may fix the prob. Cheers, P

i had nothing but trouble with utorrent.

much prefer azureus myself though many people disagree with me.

not sure about the technical issues here.

doesn't make much sense to me that you can download from one site but not from the public trackers.

I started using Bit Lord but everyone and his dog told me to try uTorrent.

However uTorrent was a no no. It was just ridiculously slow to start with and then went to red on every new torrent, so I tried Azureous but had the same problem. Went back to BitLord and have no problems. Usually takes a couple of hours to download a 170mb file.

I use Isohunt.com and torrentz.com to search out what I want.

Agrred. Get yerself a static IP and forward ports for the program according to the instructions on PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall (yes, there is a learning curve. no, it is not difficult if you do exactly what they say.)

    Problem solved.

^I've never seen that happen with a proper setup of static IPs... so either you have gone wrong at some point, or there is an unknown in the equation. What router do you use, and is it the only one (i.e. there is no additional one downstairs in your building or so?).

If only the one router, then all you need to do is to make sure you have forwarded ports in its firewall (can be called different things depending on which brand you have) for the services you plan to use like torrents, any other p2p apps, voice over ip/messengers (even though they usually manage to find a way through anyway, but with properly forwarded ports they'll be more efficient at transferring files and VOiP quality can improve as well).

Did you follow the guide at Portforward.com?

    I tried to.

I'm on a shared wireless connection at home now and at work, so it's not really worth worrying about.

Ah... well, as far as I know, if you set your computer to a static IP in a network that involves several other workstation, and the other workstations have not been configured with static IPs, then the likely problem is that another computer in the network has already been given the same IP address dynamically as you tried to assign statically to your computer, and hence, you will not be able to connect.

I haven't dealt with large wireless networks, I use a wired setup at home and only turn on the wireless function when I want to walk around using Skype rather than sit with headphones at the computer.

^ Sorry, I wasn't clear. I tried the Static IP thingy when I had my own connection, not at this place. I might give it another go when I move again later in the year.

hi the tracker status says: HTTP ERROR 403 As regards routers etc, I am living in an apartment and have a wifi cnx, what do I need to do? Also just another bit of info when I look at any website that has the word torrent associated I get: The requested URL could not be retrieved While trying to retrieve the URL: µTorrent - The Lightweight and Efficient BitTorrent Client The following error was encountered: * Access Denied. I've switched from Azureus to uTorrent in win2k and I'm not very satisfied with it.

Erratic behaviour like many other posters have described. Azureus was much more reliable even if more heavy in memory.

I'm now testing Deluge and Transmission on my GNU/Linux OS but they lack some properties. I 'm confident they will improve soon.

Can you give us a link to the torrent page for these so we can try them ourselves.

Also, have you got Protocol Encryption enabled?

Yep, Protocol encryption would be my first suggestion too.

Options / Preferences / BitTorrent / Protocol Encryption: Outgoing - Enabled

The protocol is enabled, what is the general consensus for figures inthe other boxes, max numbers etc. the tor i was trying to download was: http://www.mininova.org/tor/881749 its a font package but it seems with anything from other websites the issue happens.

Mininova is offline at the moment - that may have something to do with it if the trackers are down too.

The Huge Font Package has one leecher (possibly you) and no seeds, so basically no one is sharing the file.

The 10,000 Famous Vector Logos is working fine with me.

Have you got "Enable DHT Network" checked?

I'm using Transmission now. Uses a lot less CPU than Azureus. Was humming right along yesterday, but is very slow today. But, I tend to download stuff that isn't very popular....

In µtorrent, click Options, Preferences, BitTorrent. Make sure there is NO tick in 'Enable DHT' and "Enable Peer Exchange"

    Click Apply, OK

Also check what version of µtorrent you are using. Should be 1.7.7. There again if it works in UKNova......I dunno.
