I use diskeeper - quick and easy to use. Windows own de-fragger took 14 hours and then overheated my HD last time I used it.

don't forget to do a CCleaner run too.

O&O defrager has worked well for me. Mind you it's the only one I've used apart from the windows one. Bonus is it comes in 64bit for those of us with those systems.

There is actually a registry edit that you can make that reduces the fragmentation of the drive without even needing to run defrag.

If you navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Fi leSystem

Inside there add the DWORD ContigFileAllocSize and modify it's value to 512 while using decimal base. After this modification, you will have to reboot and defrag your HDD. Once everything is done, you should notice your HDD intensive apps run just a bit faster.

What it does is set the amount of contiguous free space Windows looks for to use for a file's data, when writing. So, a write operation of a large file will look for free blocks of no smaller than 512Kb.

Did one Friday afternoon as suggested, came back Monday morning now and seems to be running better. "Defrag" is something I used to do eagerly when windows first came out ("Oooo! Look at the colours!") but now I don't even bother with the shareware anti-virus, which has stopped begging for money and now refuses to update

Time to download another bladdy one...

Vopt defrag seems to be all the rage these days - google for it.

Worked reasonably fast. Didn't see much improvement in Windows though, there's just many possible reasons for a slowdown and fragmentation is just one of them. It has a 30 day free trial so you can use it for free at least once.

This really works great with Win95 and Win98. You even can set a higher value and have even less defragmentation. Sadly it does not work with WinXP anymore - whatever file system you use.
