I asked the Firewire/USB question because Firewire is more reliable than USB and less prone to bad connection.

I wish you would explain here just what file went missing and from where. I still can't tell from your posts exactly what went wrong.
i-movie project created off site (ext HD) - completed and saved on ext HD. During a compression to Quicktime (which would have given me a backup copy on desktop) the connection was broken, then the HD was switched off in haste without being ejected.

I agree the data is hiding somewhere, and the i-DVD project is testament to this.

No Apple staff can figure it out, Baud Hai you're a good bloke and I appreciate you're interest but the majority of replies have already ruined the thread and I'm looking into it elsewhere.

For TeakDoor i'll stick to silly threads.

You can buy a Firewire external enclosure. (I bought one here in Korat.) Then you can take the drive out of your current enclosure and put it in the Firewire enclosure.

So, if the project is still there, what have you lost?

Sorry, I still don't know what's missing except the Quicktime movie that you were creating at the time of the disconnection....

If the project is still there then you should be able to make another Quicktime file from it.

The ability to retrieve it in it's original (i-Movie) form.

Why don't you do that, then get the movie back into the system from there.
    Well?

Ok, we can now close this - I have finally found the missing data myself.

It's taken up most of the day, exploring my machine and trying different things and I am amazed the Apple staff couldn't do it, simply open up the movie in the finder in the right version of the software, click on 'Open Package' and there are all the dismantled elements of the missing movie and some other files, keep clicking on them and one opens it up in it's original format.

There was me thinking it was rocket science, especially since one of Bangkok's best technicians - an arrogant overseas studied Thai wizzkid, had said I would need to send it away or get a special disk doctor kit.

I did it myself, and I didn't use Google, and one more thing:

You can all fuck off, shows over.

(Not you Baud Hai, you stay and have a beer with me)

Sorry Scampy just logged on, but glad to hear you got it sorted. Nothing worse than having to start again when you get a project just right.

I don't think the iMovie project should be a package. A "package" is just a folder the contents of which have been hidden for display in the Finder. For example, most application files are actually "packages".

^I might be wrong. It looks like iMove HD does store projects as packages. My bad.
