I've been given the task of cleaning up a mate's laptop and after cleaning out his spyware i'm going to remove his expired copy of Norton.
Planning to install a free virus scanner, so which is better? AVG or Avast?

I would go for avg, but if you was really sensible you would just download a cracked version of synmantec.
no idea, used both but now with avast for no particular reason!
Nope. I'll not use a Norton ever, not even a cracked copy. How are the cracked ones for updates anyway? Considering Nod32 if i go that route but think the free ones are good enough.
I use Avast, seems to work ok and hasn't ever caused me any problems. Updates itself farily regularly too.
Word of advice on that though, don't leave your PC speakers on when downloading torrents overnight because when it declares: "Avast anti-virus has updated" it could give your mother-in-law who's sleeping in the spare room one hell of a fright!![]()

I use Nod32.
No problems updating with the crack.
Norton is the worst antivirus on earth, Avast is ok for a free software.
NOD32 is maybe the best, but a decent OS is my option.
I have a decent OS. Mac OS X.
This is my mates machine, unfortunately, he's stuck with Vista.
Luckily, there's others who know what they're talking about on here.Originally Posted by dirtydog

AVG - AVAST is all bells and whistles
I am with Avast, still happy with it.
Nod 32
Best I've used so far.
yeah, me too!Originally Posted by Bobcock

Well i gave him Avast. Just because i've never used it before. He seems happy enough and his computers a little faster now that Norton is gone.

Nod32 and Kaspersky have the best track records at the moments, and BitDefender is doing quite well, too.
Of the freeware alternatives, Avira antivirus has the best detection rate and is the one I use now, after AVG failed me repeatedly.
AVG is good in that it doesnt take much resources, but it has a really low detection rate, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Those of you who use it should try an online scan service or download Avira. You may be surprised, I was.
Freedom does not chew bubblegum
I've never even heard of Avira. I'll download and take a look.
Actually, i'll take that back, i tried Avira years ago. I've just been to their website and recognised their umbrella logo. This software used to have an annoying pop up when it was updating. Does it still do that?
Oh yeah, can i have that green back please, Frankenstein?![]()

Yes, the popup is still there, but if a popup once a day is what it takes to keep the doctor away for free, I think it's worth it.
I don't know Avast so maybe that is a better choice. I do know I would never recommend AVG to anyone after what happened to me. Two others I know had the same experience.

I'd go w/ Karpinski, nod32 or bitdefender. All available w/ cracks on torrents.

True Spliff, if you can get working cracked versions of any of those three they are generally better than Avira.
But if you want to go free and according to the law, I think
Avira is the best.
