After years of buying thousands of them, we finally settled on Lenovo for reliability and price.

Go to Amazon, search for laptops, use the filter to select your price range and brand, and if you have a minimum, screen size.

Then look for the best processor and RAM combination, that's what really matters.

You can buy it there or search for that particular model using Google Shopping.

Get a Macbook Air, even an M2 is superb (it'll prove very cost effective in the longterm; I'm still running my 2017 12" Macbook as my coffeeshop (usually Cafe Amazon or independant) laptop - it's brilliant).

    Anything else is misguided.

I hated them for decades, just because I didn't wanna be a Californian "sheeple"... Then I went Apple about 2017 for a laptop - by far the best laptop I've ever had, still going strong. In 2018 got a Mac mini, by far the best desktop I've every had, still going strong. They're just better. Obvious really when you control the design, chips and software that you'll be able to build better machines...

One of the best days of my life was the day I dropped my Macbook on a concrete path and it went dead forever.

No more trying to find software for work that was compatible, no more spending ages to get hard drives to mount, no more ridiculous iTunes.

I bought a Windows pc, went to scan the receipt for tax but there was no driver installed. I was asked if I wanted to install a driver, clicked yes, and it all just happened. It was an absolute revelation. Scanning was a nightmare using that bloody Mac.

I will never go back to Mac.

&, that's why the gardener loves you, Mendip...

Does your lovely daughter have an iPad or does she prefer the Microsoft Surface Pro?

I'll agree with 2 points that the Wintards have made: 1) iTunes is uttter shite, beyond shite; 2) Lennovo are a good brand that make fine machines at reasonable prices (if I were to go Windonws, and I'm not... this would be the Brand I'd go with).

    Not really.
For mobile phones, which operating system do you think is the best?
iOS, a proprietary operating system for a single mfgrs mobile phone or Android which is based on linux, is open-source and is used and maintained by fiftyeleven different mobile phone mfgrs?

It is the same with computer hardware, Apple have their proprietary IC's and an operating system only running the programs that Apple allows, while
Windows or linux runs on a standardised set of hardware that a lot of mfgrs has agreed upon.
Ffs, you can't even get your Apple product repaired in an independent shop if needed.

I got the daughter this HP for Christmas last year. It's way better than my laptop, but the thinking was to go over spec for something that should last her the next four years through education. She has a docking station with big monitor and speakers at home that she can just plug the laptop straight into when she comes home.

She has a Samsung tablet and as I just discovered today, a broken Samsung phone which she managed to break last night.

I need recommendations for a decent office chair, suitable for a Western-sized person. I don't usually like to start threads but maybe I should start one about that?

^ You are a cruel father, Mendip!

Samsung make good phones/tablets, I agree. Samsung laptops, not so good (LG laptops, utter shite).

We're talking about computers, an entirely different device. I much prefer Android to ios. I changed the RAM on the MacMini meself; simples (well, quite tricky actually... ) - I don't like Apple the company, I don't like IOS, but their computers are bloody good.

    Three times more than umpteen

    Thanks for all your help.

I went for this in the end: https://www.asus.com/bt/laptops/for-...504f/techspec/

    Just under 500 sheets.

Bearing in mind the points about brand not being too important, it came down to a choice between an MSi one, Lenovo and this, but the Lenovo and the MSi ones were a bit too heavy and I felt that this dainty little number would suit me just perfectly while sipping on my Bombay Sapphire of an evening.
    Wow.

    Just.

    Wow.

I'll add, make sure that you get one that can have RAM added later. For example, 16GB of RAM take can be doubled up to 32GB.

    Memory

    16GB LPDDR5 on board
Max Total system memory up to:16GB

    Whoops-a-lulu.

Just kidding, nice machine and nice specs.

I'll tell you what's a bit annoying is having to buy an adapter for an ethernet cable. There was only one or two that actually had the required orifice for said cable.

Yeah, seems to be a thing now, so they can be ultra slim.

The graphics system looks okay. It should be fine for watching Ev The Ledge score another couple against Torino lunchtime Sun.

^^ No thunderbolt on your laptop? I thought that was on most nowadays.
I prefer 32G RAM on Windows for photography and movie editing.

Apple do not do mil spec and only the pro has cooling fans sufficient for the tropics without air con.
