    torrent error

i downloaded a movie that won't play, but the folder did contain this message in the form of a .txt file...

    Cant Play/View Movie Properly?

Try This: Rename the .avi extension to .rar, the movie file should be inside the .rar

We did this due to repeated Copyright Violation Allegations (copyright infractions) by Numerous Studios.

    Step number 2:

Is The Movie (.avi file) Asking for a Password?

Please go to: Get Your Free Password Here for your pass it should only take a min.

    Get Your Free Password Here

We apologize for the inconvenience, Thank You
so i changed it to an .rar file, and it still wouldn't play (even in VLC), but it did ask for a password. so i went to the site listed above, but the site doesn't exist.

    any suggestions?

That's quite dodgy, .rar files are merely a compressed file (common with torrents) that you have to extract a .avi (or whatever) file from - they can't be standalone played themselves. Same thing as Winzip 'zipped' files basically.

I can't think of any logical reason they would advise changing the extentsion like that? And the password prompt looks suspicously like phising to me.

    Wise move I think.

Incidentally I've noticed myself that .rar files are becoming more common on torrents. Not sure why exactly, something to do with breaking it down making it quicker to up/download I think?

Easy enough to deal with, extract using 'WinRAR' (free, you can get an unlimited trial version that's perfectly fine).

I never download .rar files they alwasy seem to have the hoops to jump through to get a password even then half the time they are a pain-in-the-ass.
Spam, pure and simple They renamed the .rar file so you people like me would be fooled into downloading it. Report them to the site you downloaded from if you've time so they get fucking banned.

Cna't say I've ever had that problem, FF.

Then again depends where you're getting them from and what they are too I suppose. I, for instance, have never tried to download 'Lesbian Zombies of the Waffen SS'

i downloaded it from btjunkie, and the movie was 'michael clayton'....i should have known that it probably wasn't a real torrent because it's still in US theaters.

Actually I've just this minute finished extracting an episode of Heroes from .rar files. No probs.

Yep, most definately a fake I'd say. Usually if it's still in theatres best you can do at this stage is a cam release or one of those award-primers where the colour goes to black 'n white periodically.

Wise choice deleting it, rar files are usually cool but ones like that sound a bit iffy, also as a tip use torrent sites that have user comments, if any virus or bollocks are inside peeps will usually comment on it

Does the OP have WIN RAR installed ? Just to check the obvious, win rar is rather like winzip and is needed to reassemble files.

    me neither.
I'm guessing 10 percent of my downloads are .rar files. (including just about every mixed martial art torrent)

an extra few clicks, but they always work.

how about playing daa files? none of my media players (classic, vlc, winamp, quicktime) will play them.

a google search turned up something called powerISO, but it costs $30.
    any suggestions?
    besides not downloading daa files....

PowerISO is free to install and you can open files, and then move the contents of the ISO to your HD, and then uninstall PowerISO
