What in the Sam Hill is the problem now?

Went out and bought myself a new 48” Sony TV. Hooked it up to the new computer and took a look at my movies. Though some of the lower resolution downloads looked pretty bad, the majority looked great.

However, I don’t want to use the new tv with my computer. I want to use my android tv box. Android box works just fine when I connect an external HD and play movies on the big tv.

Now I want to stream from the PC to the Android box so I downloaded VLC streamer. (I use this now to stream from PC to iPad.) Downloaded VLC streamer, set it up, it works.

But, the picture looks like shit on the big TV.

My question now is, what isn’t doing the job well? The Android box or VLC?

Feel your frustration, but sadly can't help. I have a bright young lad on speed dial for all my computer/gadget crap, as I'm clueless.

    One step at a time.

On the TV, go to the menu, look for Settings, Display and see what it's set to (it should be something like 1920x1080x50hz (or 60Hz).

Then, on the Android box, go to menu, Display, and check that it's set the same.

Finally, download MX player (it's better on Android than VLC in my opinion).

Download ASUS File Manager which will scan and find Videos on the box. If there isn't one, plug an SD Card or a USB in with videos on it.

Then play one. It should ask you for a default play, so pick MX Player.

It might already work on VLC, but if the picture is still crap, go to Apps, find VLC and reset defaults.

Then select the video from ASUS File Manager and it should ask you again what player you want.

    And report back.

Ok. When I try to download MX Player and ASIS File Manager, it says they are not optimized to my device.

VLC shows the files on the PC perfectly. It’s the grainy picture that’s the problem.

Do you think PLEX might work?

    What device is it?

And did they still install anyway, because if so ignore the message.

Butters is banned from the computer forums. Haven't you noticed that people are now actually getting useful advice on these threads

Both File Manager and MX Player says installed but File Manager doesn’t open and MX Player opens to a blank page.

    Using a HiMedia box.

Thanks for the title Kitt. Brought back an incredibly vivid image of my mom. Clear as a bell. Went something like this if my name was Tommy.

" Tommy Wilson!!! What in the Sam Hill, what kind of malarkey have you gotten yourself into this time!!!" I knew I was in trouble but could not stifle my shit eating grin...

Hope you get it fixed, my Minix decided it would start putting out the whole signal in pink yesterday. Some handshake problem between the TV and Android box I think.

Himedia has a "Media Center" right?

Somewhere buried in the settings is the default media player.

Google " how to cast from pc to Android box"

And check out some YouTube vids

There are many ways to do it

There will be something already on your android box that will do it or you can install other apk files for another app to do it

I’m leaving the tv connected to the pc until I finish binge watching Gomorrah S3. Then I’ll get back to this mission.

After Googling as Baldrick says, can see many ways to do this.

I upgraded from the Himedia, but essentially I just used to have the media on storage plugged into the router and access it using SMB or NFS.

But your original problem seemed to be resolution, so you just need to get the settings right on the TV and Himedia.

After that it's really down to the quality of files you're downloading.

Update. I gave up on connecting with the Android box. Tried streaming straight from the PC to the TV.

    Success!

(Hope no one asks how I did it because I don’t know. Just dumb luck.)

The only way to do it.

    Forget the middle man.

Now get a 5.1 Surround Sound System and 5.1 SS Soundcard for the PC, WiFi Keyboard and Mouse and yer sorted.

Reckon I would rather have a good set of headphones than surround sound. WiFi keyboard and mouse already in use. What is an 5.1 SS soundcard and what will it do for me?

It will make the media files in your PC play in 5.1 surround sound.

If you have a 5.1 SS sound system, but your PC is only a 2 channel stereo system, it's only gonna play in stereo through the 5.1 speakers.

This would be a basic one:

Buy Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Fx 5.1 PCIe Sound Card with SBX Pro Studio - invadeit.co.th

One connection for each speaker and the subwoofer. Connects to the 5.1 amp, then to each speaker, so each speaker has it's own sound channel.
