What does a ChromeCast do ?

I can read the instructions .
    I do .
    I did .
And still I don't know what it does .

    The Problem
The Missy goes goggle-eyed watching terrible Thai movies on an iPad . Just a regular small iPad .
What I'm wondering is ........ if I buy a ChromeCast ( or something similar ) will it transfer the iPad movie to a tv ?
I just don't get this stuff . As soon as someone asks " Do you have HDMI ? " ..... I'm gone.
    " Do you have a Dongle ? " . ???????? Do I ?????

    yes.

    1. stick the chromecast into the HDMI port on the back of your TV and plug it into an electrical outlet.

    2. turn on your TV and select "HDMI" on your remote. if it's a samsung, you can get to this via the "source" button.

    3. check your ipad for a message that says something along the lines of "cast available". i don't use IOS, so i'm not 100% sure of what the message will be exactly, but it should be something like "cast available".

    4. click on "chromecast' and then whatever is on your ipad will be 'cast' to your TV.

Thank you ray . I would have thought any device might draw its power from the tv . I'm getting a bit tired of attaching so many powered units to a single wall outlet . Seriously should rewire I think . So it's disappointing if this thing needs yet another power supply .

If you have one ..... are you happy with it ?

If you don't have one --- just thanking you .

^ You can. It doesn’t mirror the iPad screen, though.

Guess it downloads to the dongle, then plays.

one of my favorite pieces of tech that i've bought in the past couple of years......very inexpensive and works flawlessly.

i don't know about other brands, but a chromecast needs to be plugged into an outlet.

it's a very simple piece of hardware that does only one thing....whatever is on the screen of the ipad will be 'cast' to the screen of the TV.

don't concern yourself with the router.

i just watched the video posted by misskit in post #8....and i'd suggest you do the same because while you definitely can use a chromecast with an ipad, it's not the same as using a chromecast with an android device.

Yes, you can cast to a TV and watch something different on the iPad or answer the phone.

This is the second half of the video posted above.

nope....not even a single youtube video.

i use my chromecast with android devices.

i've never owned an apple device...too lazy to learn a new OS....and quite frankly, the apple evangelism turns me off.

I’ve never used ChromeCast with my iPad. However, I have used BenQ QCast to do the same thing. It worked just fine. I have never used AppleTV but it would certainly be the best, easiest, and most expensive option.

I use chromecast dongle all the time.
My wife uses it from her phone (android)
My son uses it from his IPad 3
I use it from my laptop to watch football and tennis on the big screen.
    Works great on all.
But we fight over who's gonna watch their favorite thing on the big screen.
I've turned a few people here in Thailand on to them, you can buy them on Lazada, and they are all happy with them.
Yeah, it takes 5-10 minutes to set it up, and then switch your remote to "source" and HDMI1 (or wherever you plugged it into) and then cast on your phone or laptop. (not sure how the son gets it through his IPAD, i don't touch that thing.)
    Good luck.
    They're great.

Chromecast with an Ipad is easy. Make sure your Ipad and chromecast are on the same wifi network. Open up an app that supports casting on Ipad, there aren't many but Youtube and netflix are supported. Start your app and look for the "cast" icon on the screen. Click that. Casting starts. It's really simple and you do not need to do anything with your router or anything else.

It will come with a USB cable which you can plug into a USB slot on your IV. That will provide the power.

^apologies for being pedantic, but it's HDMI, not USB.

and my chromecast (2nd generation) needs an external power source.

I do know the difference between HDMI and USB and mine is first gen with both HDMI and USB. I didn't actually even think about the newer type, d'oh.

indeed, you can power your Chromecast from the TV usb port

I see my replies have been deleted, as usual, as pointing the obvious is so upsetting for some here

Don't bother with Chromecast any more as everything runs on the Fire TV Stick: Kodi, apks, Netflix, etc.

And yes, you can power it off the TV's USB port and it will work fine providing it has sufficient voltage for the device.

I tried one of those little HDMI Android PC's over the last few weeks, and in all three hotels I stayed in, I ended up having to power if from the mains, mainly because the TV's were old.
