I was reading up on partition management. There's a lot out there to digest and I'm a bit cautious trying something that I really don't understand very well. If I can find something that makes sense (to me) I may give it a shot. If I totally fok up the thing, I got a full system backup and plans to replace the computer anyway.....

OK you TD hotshots......get this. I did all the clean up things and whatnot; after which I ended up with 10.3 gigs of C space.. so a little bit of improvement.

Then I went and watched a few episodes of Fauda.....(an excellent TV series about Hamas and Israeli special ops guys slaughtering each other, with a bit of torture and chain smoking thrown in).

Now I come back to have a look at me C drive and it's back down to 5.3 Gigs, so 5 gigs of space vanished again when there was no activity of any kind...

I'm beginning to think the best solution is to hire a few monks from the big Wat down the road to come over and do some magic on this thing... cause so far all this other stuff is just going round in circles....

Read the first post FFS.....I did that before this tread was even born....

So how can the C drive just expand and contract like I said... I did not even use it and the space just shrunk by 5 gigs in a couple of hours...... this has to be a job for the Monks.... I think BSnub might have put an evil spirit into me drive somehow.

I can free up a load of Gigs from my D drive very easily, but I can't seem to find a way to use it to expand C....? Still trying....

Yes, I did that. I don't see any way to expand it though.

If you don't have enough space allocated to the C drive and you want to expand it look at this for instructions which will save you downloading a program to do it.

Thank you Mr Cow.....but that's exactly what I've been trying to do. The problem is that I can't get the freed up space from my D drive into my C drive because of this limitation.....

If I needed to move space from C to D it would be fine, but it's the other way round so it does not work.

Try this then. I have used this program myself and I am a bit of a computer vegie.

If this doesn't work my limited computer knowledge means I am out of ideas.

Thanks again. I've downloaded that piece of kit so we will see what happens. I have to figure out how to use it.....that may take a while.....

OK so when you used this were you able to move space from a D drive to a C drive....with the free version. I can't get it to do that any more that with the built in windows tool. When I try I get told I have to upgrade to a version that costs money.... It looks nice enough but I can't get it to do anything.....

I second this. I don't really have much on my laptop, it shows 109GB of used space. I can't really fathom what all that could be, as I don't play games or do anything similarly heavy. And automatic programs clean things up a couple times a month (according to the marketing). But I have a 450GB drive (machine purchased 2013), so all is good.

Use to be, might still be, that once your drive is more than 75% full, performance deteriorates. So even if you have 20GB free on a 120GB drive, you're in the danger zone.

start run diskmgmt.msc and look at how your drive is set out

You may well be right....but here's the really annoying bit. I have a D drive with over 800 Gigs and an E drive with another 800 Gigs. The E drive is empty and the D drive has 700+ Gigs of free space. If I can figure out to to get some of this over to my C drive and expand it then everything will be well. The computer is working great and never caused any kind of problem before....and it's still fast.

I don't mind spending the money for a new unit if that what it takes, but I don't want to buy one just to have the latest and greatest thing on the market......not if this old one does the job. Jeesus a 4 year old computer is "old" and "obsolete" these days.....now that's consumerism gone mad.... I also have a one year old Lenovo notebook.

My previous laptop had that partitioning issue, and I could never resolve it. But that was 4 years ago, maybe there are better tools now. Good luck to you. Since you have other machines, seems like you can be patient and try various paths.

I like new things, but there's something attractive about the idea of having some things that last ... as long as its not in the limp along vein.

Did you use WinDirStat?

are you sure you did it properly ? I bet you didn't since you seem to be a bit ignorant on those things

what did you do exactly to empty all your cache ? use windows optimization tools ?

you have to do it hardcore, that is go to Temp dir in your local settings and delete it all manually.

You won't believe how miuch garbage you can remove there, could be as much as 25% of your HD

NO, I went into the command window and input: ipconfig /flushdns after which I got.....Windows IP Configuration Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

That would seem to mean that the cache has been flushed.....maybe it means something different in Flemish.......

That's a known place where I can usually reclaim a GByte or two or (even three if I've long forgotten to clean it).

WinDirStat just showed me that Local Settings was 12 GByte and the culprit was not the Temp folder but an application folder.
I installed and used MP3SkypeRecorder before making a Skype phone call to authorities in my homeland half a year ago and it seems the program did not stop recording when the Skype call ended so the recording occupied 11++ GBytes

Those temp files, cookies, passwords and shit are cleaned out on a regular basis.....I don't know what other files there is that I can delete......maybe I should just trash the Operating System.....that's fix the foker.......

As I've said before, I managed to get back 10.3 Gigs after deleting everything.....then lost 5 gigs back for reasons that I can not figure out.....I did not do anything on the computer to cause the fuking C drive to shrink....
