I have had a similar problem recently. Windows 7 tells me there are updates available. I choose the ones I want to download and tell it to proceed. Windows 7 tells me it is starting to download, but it downloads nothing. I run genuine Windows and have had no problem until recently.

I tried Brise's last idea (turn off updates, restart, turn on etc), and I now have the same problem as Pragmatic - the computer is searching for updates but failing to find anything.
