From the mac mini tech specs page

Apple - Mac mini - Tech Specs

Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display; up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)

So, yes you can, with the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.

Define reasonably priced, you can get an Asus 9600GT for a tad over 4000B at Tukom.

    Yes.

The Mac mini has two display connectors on the back.

The mini-DVI and mini-DisplayPort connector can both be simultaneously active - just procure the proper adapter cable to support VGA, DVI, or what have you, and you're good to go (no drivers needed).

    Not bad for $499.

Very new though. Previous ones didn't. Interesting though.

I was offered a cheap mac mini last year but it couldn't do duel displays back then

Just fyi -- they are 'dual' (as in two) displays, not 'duel' (as in 'fight to the death').

Yes, this was added in the current version - in prior models, you could add a USB video adapter. Either way, since the prices on the Mac mini dropped, it's actually nearly cheaper to buy a new one, than to buy a used one (Mac minis hold their values remarkably well -- I am always able to sell mine 1-2 years later, for the same price, or near it, to what I originally paid.)

Not a problem -- I generally fall under the impression that people do not like to evoke the impression of being illiterate, uneducated, or dumb -- fascinating how different parents raise their children.

I thought I'd use this old thread instead of starting another.

I am thinking of buying another monitor to match the one I already have as I often have to read a PDF file that someone has scribbled notes of a design on and then switch back to my main program to make the design reality.

The only problem I have is that 99.9% (if not 100%) of new monitors seem to be crappy widescreen things that are no use to me as the PDFs are in 'portrait' if it's a text document and the other main programs I use are all setup (by MS & Adobe, not by me) to use 4:3 aspect, and I don;t play games (which, let's be honest is the only thing that is better on WS apart from the odd movie or TV from a proper country).

So, can I get a 19" 4:3 Samsung monitor in Thailand (via the internet preferably) or do I have to waste my money on a Wankscreen one?
You cannae live wiv 'em and ye cannae fucking shoot 'em

Not many normal ratio ones around..... but you could get a 23" widescreen one and then have the same (roughly) vertical pixels as on a 19" normal aspect one.

My desk is only about 6' wide and I have a printer. Plus, I'd like them to match.

I could order one from Italy, but it's a full-on TV as well, which I don't want.

WS monitors would be more useful as Tallscreen.

Why don't you buy one you can rotate 90 degrees?

I'm limited width-wise by my desk.

I fear that that is what I'll end up having to do. It'll look a bit wank though.

Move your desk, paint your wall and buy a decent projector.

    Not if you've got curtains.

But to be honest, the quality of projectors you can get now, just a white wall will probably amaze you.

Probably would, but I need 2 proper sized monitors and a projector won't cut it for my line of work.

I read somewhere that productivity in the office increases if you run two monitors.

I guess what you are really doing on one and email and porn on the other.

Two monitors are better than one

I have been thinking about this, I always used to just use 2 PC's, but PC's are a bit better these days, so I even got round to googling it, got to admit it sounds good to me.

Two monitors are better than one

You can never have enough screen space, especially when organizing and working on your digital pictures. Instead of buying a larger monitor, if you're using Windows 7, Vista, or XP, you can buy an inexpensive second monitor and connect it to your computer—instantly doubling your desktop space.
Flat panel LCD monitors look great and will save room on your desk; CRT monitors also work well and can be less expensive.
There are several different ways you can make use of this extra screen space when working at home or in your office. If you take a lot of digital pictures, some of the advantages to having dual monitors at your work space include:
    • When browsing your picture library, you can view the thumbnails on one monitor, and use the second monitor to view pictures full screen to check for proper focus and image quality.
    • When editing photos, you can use one monitor to browse the pictures with Windows Explorer or a photo library program, and use the second monitor to edit the pictures with your photo-editing software.
    • If you need to stay on top of your email while working, you can keep your inbox open on one monitor and work on your photos on the other.
Set up two monitors on your desktop computer

Many new desktop computers support dual monitors without requiring any additional hardware. To see if you have more than one monitor connection, look at the back of your computer for two Video Graphics Array (VGA) connectors or two Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connectors or one of each.
Most new desktop computers include two connectors to support dual monitors

If you only have a single VGA or DVI connector, you will need to install a video adapter. You can either install a second video adapter or replace your current video adapter with one that has two VGA or DVI connections. Installing video adapters can be difficult if you're not familiar with the inside of your computer, so you may want to seek assistance from a local computer retailer that offers computer upgrade services.

Add a monitor to your laptop computer

If you have a laptop computer made in the last several years, you can almost certainly support an external monitor by connecting it to the VGA or DVI connector on the back of your computer. The external monitor can act as a second display to your laptop's built-in display. Connect your second monitor. You may have to restart your computer so that it detects the new monitor. After you connect your second monitor, you have to adjust your display settings.
Configuring your displays:Troubleshooting: If you do not see two monitor icons, your computer might not support multiple displays. First, make sure that you have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed. Then, visit Microsoft Update, click Custom, and install any available hardware updates. You may also need to visit your computer manufacturer's website to install an updated display driver. If you still do not see two monitor icons, you may need to install an additional display adapter.
If necessary, drag the monitor icons so that they are arranged in the same way as the monitors on your desk. Click the Identify Monitors button to verify which monitor is 1 and which monitor is 2.
A dual monitor setup enables you to view the same image side by side.

Once your monitor is set up, you can use your mouse to grab the title bar of a window and drag it to your new display. If a window does not move when you drag it, double-click the title bar first, and then drag it. Having two monitors will forever change the way you work with your computer. Be creative and experiment with the sizing of application windows and what information you can keep in constant view while doing multiple tasks.

I have a 19" Dell Laptop with a 24" LCD as a second display. It's an absolute doddle in Windows 7.

Almost everyone I know with 2nd and 3rd displays use a widescreen tilted 90 degrees like suggested here, it makes it great for all reading beit PDF, editing text documents or even email.

Personally I use a 16" widescreen HP laptop usually just as a clock, mp3 jukebox and weather display, then have a 28" LCD widescreen as my primary and my ipad as my 3rd display showing only my email & Skype.

Have you considered buying a wall-mount bracket as opposed to racking them due to the lack of desk space? I know that these brackets for LCD monitors can be very cheap to buy from Chinese vendors (maybe $20USD) and many are very adjustable with swivels, tilting, height adjustments and so on. Racking them tend to make them fairly stationary.

    Edit: What is doddle?
