Thread: Signing Out Of G-mail On Android

I have a sony experia phone and it is linked to my g mail account. It seems that it must be linked to a google account in order to use its online capabilities.

I cannot find any way of signing out of g-mail on the device.
I hardly ever use the phone for e-mail, so I would like to delete the g-mail app from the phone, but cannot.


If the phone is lost or stolen, then someone will have instant access to my g-mail account and all the dark secrets it contains.

Other than (a) setting a lengthy and complicated password for the phone screen which means I will need to enter it each time the screen cuts off or (b) setting up a dedicated gmail or google account for the phone it seems I am stuck with this rather unsatisfactory state of affairs.

Any suggestions as to how to set up the phone so that if it is lost or stolen the new owner does not have immediate access to my gmail as soon as they turn on the wi fi.

Android has me fvcked, too old to work it, i brought an android phone once after 1 year trying to answer the thing, i ditched it

settings , accounts , google and un sync

already done, but all a new owner has to do is to turn sync back on, and gmail is active again.

I created a new gmail account only for my phone

if I want to access real gmail I do it through the web browser

i think that is the only way, although i can disable android device access to google by tweaking the google control panel on my windows laptop, but i dont know what other havoc that might wreak on my phone so i am as yet loathe to try it.

Put a pattern lock on the screen, only takes you a second to swipe



Download lookout security, you can wipe everything off the phone when some filthy himshe nicks it, you can even locate the phone and send an alarm to it... if they are daft enough go on tinternet.

ive got a pattern lock already, but it shouldnt take someone more than a few minutes to break it.

I ditched Sony for this reason.

Apparently, settings > accounts > google > menu > remove account and then create a new gmail account just for the android.

Android is a google thing, and they like to keep tabs on everyone.

Let me preface this that I have been passed by in the worlds rush to have ones life taken over by a phone device, thus not knowing much about them at all, a Samsung. Reason for buying this? Dual sim cards. Irritations - many, not least the Bin button on email located just above the BACK button, so I am always fishing in the bin for emails. Other irritations - the relentless updating of things I do not know or care about, and yet when I try to delete them, I am told they are important. If you ditched Android for this reason, fair enough; although I doubt iPhones or Windows phones are much different in this area.

I ditched it, thinking I could get another one without that permanent link. I was wrong. However, dual sim cards caught my eye, so I bought one of them, and then realised I had to sign in with gmail lol .

As I said... I am not a phone queen pro like most of you lot seem to be.

trouble is i cant seem to get rid of my existing main e mail account on the bloody phone.

it warns me of dire consequences if i delete the account.

Why not just changing the password on your gmail account from your computer but not updating your mobile phone ? Without the correct password, your phone can't access your account anymore.

ignore them. all that will happen is that when you restart the phone it will demand you put in a gmail account. Just do it with a newly made up on - such as "fukyougmailbastards@gmail.com

i just did that and had to factory reset my phone, that password is for your whole google account, not just gmail.

don't do that, you will delete the whole account.

If you want rid of that gmail account on your phone, save all your pics and stuff to your pc, do a factory reset, then open a new google account when prompted

i added another g-mail account, the one i rarely use except for "other stuff", and then apprehensively deleted my main g-mail account.

no adverse effects yet, i signed back into the phone on the new account, signed into google play, maps, you tube with the new g mail and all is tickety boo.

strangely, but thankfully it has cleared out a lot of unwanted shit from my contacts list such as duplicates, old e-mail contacts and all the other stuff that gets added to contacts everytime the sync function coughs into life.

sadly, the phone is still apron stringed to google, but its a dead account with no links back to my main account.

Actually, although I like Android, I prefer custom versions to the stock shite.

And my users have the choice of Android, iPhone and WP8.

Got rid of that Bilgeberry crap ages ago.

For the novices I always recommend WP8, it's by far the easiest for email and surfing.

For people like the OP, I just recommend a good second-hand Nokia 3100.
