Hi to all, if anyone is wondering about Linux, try Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS
Its easy to use, never breaks down, no error messages or fatal mistake messages across the screen.
Have tried Ubuntu 13 , to resource draining, in my opinion not as good.
Another good distro is Mepis 11..very solid and reliable.
Tried Debian Wheezy last week,to much effort for to little in return, in my opinion.
What I do with laptop, is buy a spare Sata hardrive,$40 , slip hardrive cover off on base of computer, pull old one out, insert new one, format hardrive, leaving old H/d with Windows on if it is needed.
Some people dual boot, for me its easier this way.
Office and many other programs are free with Linux.
Also with formatting drive no discs are needed, as Linux seems to have every driver in the world, well a lot.
You need internet connection when formatting.
Easy on screen instruction as well.
Hope this helps someone someday.
Plus its not illegal software.

used it for years but couldn't get one or two programmes that i needed to work...notably sopcast and audacity (which other people claim to have got working in linux...fukked if i could sort it out)

reluctantly installed windows 7 a few years back and have found it to be a million times better than previous flavours of windows

OSX is the way to go

Years since I've run linux, used to love it.... but like noon, there was a few things that I couldn't sort out, so had to switch

Audacity is a good program, I use it sometimes, will look at Sopcast and try it.
I have W7, XP Pro , sometime have to use Windows, 95 % use Ubuntu.
It always just works, not a hogger of resources.

Hi NickA,
tried Apple a few times, programs are to expensive, but the always work.
Itunes gives me the irrates, pity as Iphone is very user friendly.
These day with Linux , many specialized Distros, available for most situations.

It can be done , bit of terminal work, but do able.

Linux is great if you don;t need to use programs that the rest of the world uses. Hence in Use Win 7.

correction, Linux is great for serious computing, not for surfing online porns and online forums

not for the average clueless users, they can use OSX or Win7 for retards

I believe it gets down to what system is universally compatible with the assorted apps and software....

used to be..... but not really such a problem anymore

you can get most things for most OS

plus, if you're on a decent computer, most OS offer virtualization software to run other OS

I had linux, windows 7 and windows 8 running on OSX, but to be honest I couldn't find any use for them

True, but I often have compatibility issues with a chap I work with who uses a Mac. In his defence, I'm not sure if it's the software at fault or that he's Apple's target demographic.

if it's using stuff like office... you can have compatibility issues between one windows computer and another.... especially with powerpoint

There is an issue with 2013 which shows up on 2007 as blank slides. It's easily fixed though. Otherwise, no issues in nearly 4000 decks.

Decided I needed more opensource software (its free and legal) installed Debians
Kwheezy 1.4.. rather large download, but lots of very useful software.
Installation fairly normal, there is a good install guide on Kwheezy home page.

It needs a lot of grunt, not good for low resource systems, good for beginners or advanced.
I wanted certain programs, normally have to download separately, all included.

I use AMD 8 core processor, with 16GB memory, about $320 in Aussie, with a GigaByte motherboard, $120, Dvd drive $20 , case with 4 usb 3 , 8 usb 2 P/S 600
$120.. easy to build, plug and play.No discs needed as Linux finds all the drivers.
Use onboard graphics, very good quality, well for my old eyes.That means no separate grafics card.
Comes with Libre Office, free.
