    email probelm

somehow my yahoo address is being used to send spam to email address's I have sent mails to before, although nothing is in the sent box. I have scanned for trojans etc and a few were then deleted, but the problem persists with people emailing back that I have not contacted and many could not deliver messages in my in box. Looking up the ip address of the sender of the spam comes up with does not exist. How does this work and is there a way to stop it without deleting the account? I already changed the password

Sames been happening to me. People have been receiving spam from my Email address and I've been receiving spam from addresses I no longer associate with. I changed my Email password and it hasn't since, as far as I know.

seems they don't need the password though, just the address of an active account

If they got your password, ho would that have happened? Do you use Internet cafes often? Seems like they could have programs running on those comps logging lots of information. How long has it been since you reinstalled your OS. That's one way to wipe any odd stuff off it that might be in it. I do it pretty regularly.

Plus do you use a legit OS? A recent story...

I hear this often about Hotmail. I is puzzled.

I've been using the same hotmail acc since I think the mid 1920's, and other than one incident of a password breach i've had zero problems. No spam in my inbox, ever. No mail in my spam box, ever. Probably the only thing that MS is doing right.

Well, windows xp and 7 ain't half bad.

I have a gmail acc. Seldom use it. Hotmail is easy and simple.

I is no noob, btw. Been around computers since before computers.

Evidently if you have been emailing since the 1920's. The trouble is who did you used to email back then, I don't think many were using it back then.

    .
Have to disagree with you there RS.

My secretaries yahoo account was completely hijacked. Password changed, recovery questions changed, alternate account email address changed and it was being used to send out begging emails.

Working with yahoo, we got the account back within about 7 days.

I had exactly the same thing happen just a few days ago with my Yahoo account.
It was odd, because although I don't have a contacts list, a few people who I have VERY seldom emailed got messages. And some Failed Delivery messages appeared in my inbox. But no mail in the SENT box.
I don't think a person got into my account....it seemed automated.

Don’t argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Thing is mail servers use the SMTP protcol to talk to each other, the senders address is simply whet ever is sent with the "mail from:" command. The server will without additional sntispam software, simply accept what ever email address is given. so its rather trivial to send email with faked sender addresses. And this happens lot and there is bugger all as the owner of that email address you can do about it.

What can be done is for the receiving email server to use spam checking software to compare the ip address of the sender with a list of ip addresses the owner of the sender's domain lists as being their own servers. Unfortunatly many domain owners don't publish lists of the ip addresses of their outbound mail servers and many receiving email servers do not do the check. So the spammers continue to use this technique.

so receiving mail bounce messages for mail you did not send, does not necessarily mean that you account has been hijacked.

Change your password as stated above, and it can't just be "imawanker123". Or it'll get hacked again. The program responsible for all if this is called Jack the Ripper.. It can figure out any password if given enough time, Somethimg like BKKjohn11 only lasts about one to three hours with Jack on the case.... An ideal password will have many Caputalizations and numbers and be fairly long.

My email got hit last night and in 10 minutes they sent out 80 emails, Changed to a complex pass and all is well.
