If you're watching HD movies at HD resolution then you'll need a lot of processing power. If you're watching 700MB DVD rips then any laptop made in the last 5 years will prolly do you well.

Too early to say what Win8 will bring to the table for static computing. Expectations are it'll be focused on mobile usage, though Beta releases show it uses less resources than Win7 and better suited to SSD drives. Could be worth waiting for on that alone. It's not long till it's released, and when it is benchmarks will be coming thick & fast. If you hold off for a month you'll either get a better OS or a cheaper Win7.
