What is the best CPU for my needs

As I've stated I am shopping for a new laptop.

My uses are: downloading films, surfing the internet, email, etc.

I do not do any gaming or any thing beyond what I noted above.

My question is: what is the best CPU for me?

I plan to keep my next laptop for 5 years or more. (My current laptop is 6 years old).

Some of the i-core 5s I've seen are $300 more than the cheaper Acer laptops that have CPUs such as

    Product Details
    · 2 GHz Pentium B940
    · 4 GB
    · 500 GB
    · Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Or,

    Product Details
    · 1.6 GHz Celeron D 420
    · 2 GB
    · 320 GB
    · Windows 7 Home Premium
    Or, how about this:

    Product Details
    · 3.1 GHz Core i5-2450M
    · 4 GB
    · 500 GB
    · Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Because I plan to keep my laptop for 5 years and I use it so much, should I spend the extra $300 or more to for the i-core 3 or i-core 5?

    Appropriate for my uses?
    ............

wait a few months and get an i7. They'll drop in price after Win8 is released and Intel launch their latest processors.

Do any of those listed have an HD output? That's a big consideration if you plan to use it for watching movies on your TV.

For your needs just get the cheapest, not as though your going to be designing websites or building nuclear weapons.

An Intel Atom can do all that.
Any current CPU will be enough for your needs

A tablet will serve those basic needs. Plug it into your TV to watch the movies from it.

Quicker start up time than a laptop and better battery life, more portable too

A big thanks to you all: Marmite, Sam13, Fail Safe, dirty dog, Thetyim, and Dillinger.

The only thing I will not get is a tablet.

I prefer a laptop for my home entertainment and I won't be taking it out of the house. My apartment is my sanctuary for entertainment. I think I will get a 15" screen.

I have some thinking and homework to do.

Another additional detail: I will buy ordering the laptop in December in the US while I am visiting the USA for a month. Hopefully Windows 7 will be out.

Thanks for the advice. I will ponder and decide. I do like learning and reading about this stuff.

By "HD output" do you mean Hard Drive storage space? I will buy a laptop with 500 GB of HD space.

More importantly, I will save my downloading - which is becoming a lot now - onto a Western Digital Portable Hard Drive w/ 1 TB of space. I am downloading as much stuff as I can for future entertainment: films, documentaries, TV series, etc.

That's a big consideration if you plan to use it for watching movies on your TV.
    True.

If you are gonna leave it in your house then get yourself an Acer all in one. They have WiFi and start with 20 inch screens, depending on the model you want, and can be easily carried around the house.
They also start at only 13,000 baht which is cheaper than most laptops. They need a permanent power source as they have no battery, which is what probably makes them cheaper too.
Probably a pain if you have frequent power cuts though

Yup, especially if you want to keep it for a few years, when nearly all content will be HD.

    I would definitely.

Did you understand what that says in Thai to get it for 9900 baht Superman ?

You have to hand over your old PC in as Part exchange.

They are in Tesco Lotus for less than 13000

The all-in-one is a neat unit if you don't require portability, and don't need to keep multiple upgrade options open (I wuz tempted myself but... Gamer). I'd say by the time you are in the states, with the new Ivy bridge processors coming on stream, the i7 processors will be quite reasonably priced and given your 5 year timeline I would give them the nod over the i5. 4GB Ram- it's cheap anyway, no need to skimp.

Better to get a 12 or 13 inch screen and an external 22 inch monitor. So your machine is easy to carry when you need to, even if that is not often.

    Thanks for the info, Dillinger.

Some points that may narrow my choices:

    1. I never carry my laptop around the house. It's in the same spot. I'm happy with that.

    2. I never have power cuts. Never.

So....a 20" laptop? I've never seen one but I have not searched for it. Perhaps I should look.

    Amazon?

    Thanks.

I'll be in the US to buy in December.

    i7 available by then?

    Thank you.

Yes, with a 5-year time line I want to buy "up" becaus as usual, things changes constantly. 4GB RAM definitely.

Why not buy a desktop PC?

After years of laptops over here I bought a new desktop when I moved into my house.

20 inch HD monitor. Great for movies etc.

All on a mobile computer desk with good sound system, so easy to move around the house.

In the future when I want to upgrade hardware it will be a simple change.

    Cheaper too.

For a home based computer that will never leave the house I wouldn't consider a laptop.

I know what you mean. Buddy of mine bought one recently.

But seriously, I just do not know how long I will be where I am at. Seriously. I need the potential mobility - in a move - not everyday.

A laptop is what I need. I certainly see your point.

    Fair nuff.

I can just say that having the large HD monitor (monitor sounds so old fashioned eh, should really be LCD Flatscreen) after having a 15" laptop for years is amazing.

As someone suggested, getting a good, big monitor to connect to for TV shows etc (I watch a lot of Docos and watching BBC HD Doco's etc. through the comp is amazing compared to the 15" lappy) might be a good idea.

I can easily connect a large monitor to a laptop, correct?

    USB cable?

    (Pardon my ignorance.)
