    Old software versions

I recently bought a monitor for an old desktop that I had lying around under my desk to watching vids on and posting crap on TD.

I hadn't used it for a fair while and still had Firefox 3 on it. I thought it was quite nice than the newer versions so initially ignored the upgrade nagging for a week or so. I then decided, what the hell and upgraded to the latest version. Now, this old PC is about 10 years old and runs an AMD XP 2500 which is about 1.4Gb if I remember correctly and I immediately started getting freezing problems with the new version of Firefox. Added to the fact that the older version has a much nicer interface, I decided to 'downgrade' back to 3.6 despite the nagging that will continue every time I fire her up.

I'm seriously considering going back to 3.6 on my main PC as I'm sure it'll be a vast improvement on there as well.

Try Chrome. FF is so unstable, even Aurora.

Back on track for you Marmite...

The pros of using older programs are speed...if they are still compatible (sadly many good programs are left by the wayside unless someone has time to upgrade them)....Some software outgrows itself through upgrades by using too many resources...others add on too many options/tools/add-ons etc by default and make themselves too heavyweight....You could simply try to turn a few of these off...The early versions had possibilities for attack and some low life like to spend time making other people unhappy...simply because they found out they can...dumb bastards.

I am surprised you have not tried Opera and dislike Chrome...both are lightweight and quick...but I do not know your needs so cannot comment further...

I still use the unix vi editor (now VIM7.3 on windows)...and many other unix tools that make others think I am a dinosaur...but nothing beats them for me....You are always faster and better with the things that suit you....

I have been saying it for years, upgrading to the latest doesn't make sense 90% of the time, only idiots and zealots like HarryX who needs the new software to make his life meaningful

same with Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista, unless you are into toys interface

Running FF3 and it's great, even FF2 is nice

Skype 3.8.0 was the best version but I think it only works on XP

I'm running 5.8.0.188 which means I can easily miss a message because the flag is too small

    Skype 3.8.0.115 apparently works with Win7 - I'll give it a go.

I run Skype 5.9.0.123...and have no problems on Win 7.

When I had a disk crash last month and rebuilt from scratch Skype 3.x.x.xxx would not run (cannot remember exact version)....had to upgrade to v5 to get it to run properly...

Never had a problem with downloads using Chrome....Had so many problems on my Ubuntu box with FF after upgrades that I switched to Chrome and have been happier with it...

I take it both of you are either incredibly dim or haven't used Chrome in a long time?

Chrome doesn't remember the password for UKNova for example.

Chrome isn't flexible enough to handle downloads in the way I need it to and I sometimes DL a couple of hundred files a day. For me, it is not good enough. For others, it may well be.

FFS Use Flashget then if you're doing that many downloads (torrents or otherwise). But what version of Chrome are you talking about?
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

^ Then I would have thought a decent download manager, with resumeable downloads, would be de rigeur. And yet you use a browser?

And when did your work involve UKNOVA then?

Downloading images doesn't really need a DL Manager with resume capability. It needs something that works exactly how Firefox does for my use, and how Chrome cannot.

UKNova was an example of Chrome's ineptitude. I'm not likely to post work related info for you lot.
