Thread: Suitable device?

I'm going back home for an extended stay and work will be part of the reason. I will have a use for a GPS and am also considering GPS for golf. I am not into smartphones, tablets, gadgets and millions of apps. I use a phone for making calls only. What single device would best suit my needs? I'm looking around at what is available here at a better price than Canada, but compatibility issues may arise as well as service plan/operating cost. Any advice?

When you say GPS for golf, do you mean something along the lines of Sky Caddy? If so they aren't allowed under PGA rules so I was told.

I have a ten year old cheap Nokia. Sends and receives texts and calls. rings like a phone. I also have an IPhone4, which my phone service provider gave me free two months ago. Still sitting in the box - just can't be assed to screw with it.....

why a gps for golf

anyway the do it all phones like samsung galaxy and iphone4 have really come a long way.

cheap nokia's are all I'm allowed , treat em like disposables .

still want a fokin normal ring tone though

the galaxy S has really nice old fashioned ring tone.
with the launch of the galaxy3 you should be able to find used galaxy S models pretty cheap.
I reckon I'll trade in both my galaxy S and galaxy tab 7" for the new G3. Bitching handheld device it is indeed.

What to find the course? Probably not. I think I've heard it all now.

I thought golf was a game played with clubs and a ball, mostly on grass.

^^ I don't think I'll get rid of the SII for a long time, have a great ROM on it, a cover with an extra battery, does absolutely everything I need.

^ You'd be amazed how many courses are actually already plugged in by people.

You bang in the course, and enter the number of players, and it will take care of all of that stableford nonsense for you.

And the GPS side makes it a breeze to work out distance to the pin or to various course features like doglegs.

What it won't do, of course, is hit the fucking ball for you, so most Golf clubs will allow it for casual rounds, but forbid it during comps, where the decent players can benefit.

Okay 14 replies in and not really any specific recommendation. Just the usual derision, to be expected. Thanks harry you're the only one who gets it. Research suggests that the only device that will do what I want is a 'smartphone' with a couple of GPS apps installed. Before the affordability of hand held GPS I used a stack of map books to locate properties, many of them very rural. So I'm looking to make that easier. On an unfamiliar golf course with little or no yardage markings a yardage GPS is very useful. Some apps have as many as 30,000 courses. And I doubt I will ever be playing PGA events so legality is not an issue. Although laser/rangefinder binoculars are legal for practice rounds.

If you're not into smartphones or tablets, then forget about GPS.

Otherwise, get used to the fact that a portable device with GPS in it is either (a) a GPS unit or (b) a smartphone/tablet.

If it's for use in Canada, I would suggest you wait until you get home and then ask at your local electronics/phone shops, where they can tell you what's best.

A service/data plan is going to be a big expense with an unlocked gadget, so you're probably better getting a contract that includes a nice device from the service provider that does what you want, and allows you to upgrade every year or something.

I would suggest the Galaxy Note if you want a decent sized screen for GPS.

If you don't want millions of apps, don't download them.
