Google Drive vs. Dropbox ... free cloud storage

Dropbox has been great, but Google Drive seems to be almost as good, at about 20% of the price. I've always thought Dropbox pricing was way to expensive, but does this new offering from Google put Dropbox out of business?

BTW, I signed up for Google Drive here, and got access the next day. 5GB free. It's also not too hard to get 5GB free with Dropbox.

I think I may just end up using both. Anyone else tried Google Drive?

I am happy with dropbox and I use less than 1GB for documents

why would anyone needs more than 5GB of space for putting important documents, unless they need to store their porn or movie crap

Dropbox deserves credit for showing the others how to do it, Apple iCloud aside. Excellent integration on Mac and Windows, and excellent apps on the supported mobile platforms. It has attracted huge numbers of free users though, raising questions about its business model, and its security record is not the best. One of the problems for all these services is that 2GB of data is actually a lot, unless you get into space-devouring things like multimedia files or system backups. This means that many will never pay to upgrade.Google Drive presents as a folder in Windows and on the Mac, but it is as much an extension of Google Apps, the online office suite, as it is a storage service. This can introduce friction. Documents in Google Apps appear there, with extensions like .gdoc and .gsheet, and if you double-click them they open in your web browser. Offline editing is not supported. Still, you do not have to use Google Apps with Google Drive. Another issue is that Google may trawl your data to personalise your advertising and so on, which is uncomfortable – though when it comes to paid-for or educational services, Google says.

I've been using Yousendit.com to send large files to other people for ages, as an alternative to storing them permanently on t'interwebnet or dicking about with an FTP server.

The free version allows up to 100Mb I think, and they are deleted after 14 days or something.

We use YouSendIt as well. It works great when the person responsible for paying the fees does so.

They did have a problem with the contacts list hooking up with YSI Express a few weeks ago, but it's been fixed now.

Just installed dropbox on the new HTC phone I got for the missus. Got 25 gb free with the phone so I am using it to back up about 10gb of photos which I can also share with the folks back home by sending them a link.

    Great stuff.

Have also set it up to automatically upload from her camera whenever she takes a photo or any vid - shared this folder with my iPhone dropbox so I can see stuff straight away when I am away.

Told her it is all up in the clouds now.

I've been using Dropbox for 18 months & I reckon it's great. I've got 35. GB of storage & I haven't used it all. It's good to transfer files, but I still don't like the idea of any personal stuff floating round in cyberspace. As soon as it becomes too popular the hackers will start stealing everyone's info.

dropbox actual storage is actually on Amazon S3 servers if I am not mistaken, they are only providing an interface to it

it's safe to assume that all the files are already been accessed by Corporations like Amazon and hackers alike,

I have put some confidential company documents on dropbox, couldn't care less if they could make any of it, meaningless without the proper context

Microsoft skydrive is great. Latest version has an add-in to Windows explorer so it appears there. New users get 7GB, existing users can still hold on to 25GB free if they update their options.

Data is stored on the cloud and every registered computer plus available on the web. Even files not stored on skydrive can be accessed from another computer provided the host machine is powered up. When you try to access the computer from another machine you get an e-mail with a one-off code then can browse the home computer and access the files.
