Hardware guys - do I have a problem?

I have a number of utilities on my PC reporting high temperatures for either CPU or motherboard. Some of them seem to be telling me 78 - 80 degrees Celsius, and that I've only got one fan working. I'm not a hardware guy - so, do I have a problem? And if so, what do I need to do about it?

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

do like all basement boys do, install a liquid cooling system, looks really cool in the night

    ask harryb for details,

Question: what kind of CPU is it ? QuadCore ?

Those temp values are not in any way abnormal.
CPU1 Fan is for system with dual cpu slots so it is not relevant for most motherboards.

Have you only got one fan? Or do you have another that isn't working? If so, fix/replace it.

Oh, and get a vac and clean the dust and shit off the motherboard - the layer of crap leads to higher temperatures and shorter life.

You need to avoid static, so look up how to do it safely.

Four fans inside. One on the chip, one on the power, one built-in to the graphics card and another one. As far as I can tell, they're all spinning.

^ I can see that these temps are at full 100% cpu usage correct? Those temps are not unusual for a stock cooling setup while the system is under load. Intel tests cpu's to over 100 Celsius. Harry's also correct in say that you should blow the fcuk out of it with canned air. I do this about once a month. I disconnect it take it outside, remove the side panel, proceed to blow all the dust out of the fans and off the motherboard etc etc. That will always improve airflow.

it is a good idea to blow the dust from your heatsinks at least every 6-12months

That tool will not report the PS-fan and the graphics-card-fan. The separate fan may not have a speed indicator, so would not be reported.

Cleaning especially of the CPU heat sink is always a good idea.

78C CPU , way outside safe working limits , if nothing else the cpu is most likely throttling itself at that temp .

wot harry said and surprisingly if the PC is not in an ac room then buttfok has the correct answer ...liquid cooling .

Depends on what your CPU is.

That temp would be way to high for my elderly processor. Find out you CPU make and model and go to the manufacturers website to get the ideal temperatures.

And give your computer a clean as already noted.

Just had the techs in and they say my laptop charger is above 50C.

Doesn't feel like it to the touch, but it's glowing like a supernova on their scanner.

Keep in mind that these temps are with the proc throttled at 100%. In real life this happens for only seconds typically. The temps never are sustained. This is ok.

If this was an issue then your computer would be shutting down unexpectedly or restarting. If this is not happening then no worries.

If I took my PC out and blew the dust out with compressed air, the sun would disappear for a few months...

Other than running a tad high temp wise is there anything actually wrong with the PC that is causing concern ?

I agree with the comment above about H20 cooling, all my PC's are water cooled including the car pc, never have an issue with high temps but don't bother with those crappy all in one kits, better of air cooling than using them.

My Fujitsu started overheating when the battery got old.
    The charger was working overtime.
You can get pads with fans to sit your laptop on.

Thanks guys. I'll clean out the dust as you'e all suggested. The temp stays at about 78 even when the CPU is idle, and I'e noticed quite a lot of lag and slow response times recently. That's why I used a couple of monitoring programs in the first place. The PC is in the bedroom with AC going when it't hot. What is a CPU heat sink and how do I clean it?

get a smaller CPU next time, better

who needs a quadcore to do email and watch porn, ridiculous

if your name is harry and you need to show off to your "XBOX" buddies how cool you are with a QuadCore i7 then it makes sense

don't forget the liquid cooling system with all the lighting show that goes with it

yep, normal for modern CPUs these days

some Macs even catch fire from hot CPUs and Battery packs because of their gay plastic enclosure

CPU heatsink sits on top of your CPU and its purpose is to dissipate heat. It will have a fan attached to it. Shoot air into the fan blades and through the fins of the heatsink. Also if you are getting those temps at idle then you need to add more case fans to increase airflow there is room to mount them inside your case. At bare minimum you should have a 80 or 120mm fan upfront pulling air into the case and another 120mm fan in the rear to exhaust the hot air.

It'll be in the middle of your motherboard have a fan on it and most likely have some sort of metal/copper radiator-like appearance. The fan should be easy to unplug and unclip. The heatsink will prolly be held down with screws and will be in contact with the CPU. Don't take this off unless you're comfortable with cleaning the CPU and reapplying thermal grease. Clear out any dust between the heat sink fins and in the fan. You can use a can of air to blow dry it. Don't use a vacuum cleaner because of static caused by the moving air. Remember to plug the fan back in to the connector on the motherboard where it was before you unplugged it.

Clean out you case fans while you're in there too.
Some people think it don't, but it be.
