Ford/Mazda workers block Sukhumvit Road in Rayong to demand bonus

Ford/Mazda workers block Sukhumvit Road in Rayong to demand bonus
    December 24, 2008

Some 300 employees of Auto Alliance (Thailand) Co, Ltd, block Sukhumvit road in Rayong province on Wednesday to demand the firm to give them more bonus.
    Atchara Wisetsri

Rayong - Some 300 workers of Ford/Mazda Co used 50 pick-up trucks and sedan cars to block the Sukhumvit Road near the provincial office, demanding higher bonus than agreed by their companies.

The workers blocked both inbound and outbound Sukhumvit Road since 8:30 am, causing severe traffic snarls.

Police had to divert vehicles to use alternative roads.

Two companies of commando police were deployed to the scene and threatened to use force to break up the road blockade.

The workers demanded Ford/Mazda Co to pay them six and a half bonus plus an allowance of Bt25,000 but the company agreed pay six months of bonus plus an allowance or Bt14,000. The workers were dissatisfied and blocked the road.

What's wrong with six months bonus?

Dummy spitters. With today's economic crisis they are lucky to have a job.

If they use tear gas or batons will this new PM prosecute them?

geesus they aren't very smart are they?? 6 months bonus + an allowance? is that coming out of the bailout stimulus plan American tax payers are paying for?? They better get their asses back to work!

My wife has 11 years on her job and in middle management and only gets a month and a half without any guarantee of that even. She has to wait until the end of Jan, before she even sees that and she hasn't had a cost of living increase in over 3 years, though living has gotten costlier.. Much of that is due to the unrest here but still it could be afforded if it weren't for the fact she is working for a Thai company..

Why do they actually need a bonus ??? have they done something above and beyond the regular duty of their employment agreements ???

If i hit my boss up for a 6 month bonus, he would show me the door.

    Quite simple really.

Most large Thai companies operate similar schemes.

The bonus scheme is calculated to compensate for the low salaries and to encourage people to stay with the company for a long period. i.e. you don't get 6 months bonus if you've only been with the company a year, you'll probably only get one month. After two years, two months, etc.

In other words, the bonus is a 'loyalty bonus', not performance related. However, usually each company will operate some scheme that penalises the bonus for lazy workers, i.e. persistently late - lose 10%, using all your sick days - lose 10% (looking at me in a funny way - lose 50% , etc)

    The problem is that:

    a) They never make it clear to the workers that the bonus is not guaranteed.
    b) The workers come to take it for granted that the bonus will allways be paid out.
    c) Many workers borrow in advance assuming they are going to get 'x' bonus.

^ I'm sure they'll be more than willing to do that if you cut 30-40% off your basic salary, accept the penalty conditions and understand that they're not obliged to pay out anyway.

^ also of course, bonus packages are not included in the calculations if it becomes necessary to pay severance, so it's cheaper to get rid of people.
