Men lucky to be alive after car hits kangaroo and bursts into flames
Three men are lucky to be alive after their car hit a kangaroo and burst into flames, igniting a grassfire along a rural NSW motorway.
The men were able to get out of the car quickly and call firefighters about 7am yesterday, four kilometres north of Michelago, in the Monaro region.
Three fire engines reportedly arrived at the Monaro Highway within 10 minutes to quickly extinguish the blaze.
Michelago Rural Fire Brigade Captain Brent Wallis told the ABC the impact of the car colliding with a kangaroo set the engine bay into a fireball – something he’d rarely seen in his 20 years battling fires.
“The flames were about three to four metres high,” Mr Wallis said.
“I was surprised no-one was injured.
“The young men were fine and walking around, they actually tried to help us put out the grass fire … but shock is a thing that comes later.”

OMFG ... Aussies are sobering up HIC!
Australia's love for the drink has hit a dry spell, new data shows, as alcohol consumption drops to levels not seen since the early 1960s.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics' latest report shows that in 2016-17 the total booze consumed by people over 15 was equivalent to 9.4 litres of pure alcohol per person.
Put another way, the ABS said that looked a little like this per person, per year:
- 224 stubbies of beer
- 38 bottles of wine
- 17 bottles of cider
- 4 bottles of spirits, and
- 33 cans of premixed spirits
Believe it or not, this is actually the lowest average consumption recorded since 1961-62.
The overall drop has been led by a continued decline in beer intake, with Australians drinking roughly the same amount of beer as wine these days, as measured in pure alcohol terms.
"If 224 stubbies sounds like a lot, contrast that with 1974-75 when Australia reached 'peak beer' and the consumption was equivalent to over 500 stubbies per person," ABS director of health statistics Louise Gates said.

Perth Mint unveils Australia's most expensive collector coin, crowned with pink diamonds
The coin's pink diamonds alone are worth about $1.7 million, Perth Mint says.
The Perth Mint has unveiled the most valuable collector coin in Australian history — a diamond-encrusted treasure valued at nearly $2.5 million.
Key points:
- The coin is made up of 99.99 per cent gold and has four Argyle pink diamonds
- It is valued at $2.48 million
- The coin is expected to end up in the hands of a buyer in Asia or the Middle East
The Discovery gold coin is based on the holey dollar, which was introduced by governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1814.
It is made of 99.99 per cent gold andcontains four Argyle pink diamonds, with Perth Mint chief executive Richard Hayes saying it represented opulence and exclusivity.
"Gold and diamonds are amongst our most prized possessions," he said.
The coin shows a sailing ship, a panning prospector and boab trees to signify the Kimberley region.

A look inside Australia’s wildest festival in outback NSW
BEER, burnouts and boobs are some of the attractions that sees a small rural town overrun with 20,000 rowdy revellers each year.
TODAY thousands of Aussies will flock to a town in rural NSW to attend a wild festival celebrating country music, utes, beer, mullets and mud — and if last year’s event is anything to go off, things are likely to get very rowdy.
Almost 20,000 revellers are set to attend the Deniliquin Ute Muster in the state’s Riverina region for what may be the most true blue Aussie festival in the country.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Deni Ute Muster and is shaping up to be a huge two days, with international country star Carrie Underwood headlining the event.

Australian restaurants scramble to get their hands on emu eggs
Emu Eggs in Field...Smaller emu eggs are usually infertile.
Demand for a uniquely Australian product is booming, with emu eggs featuring in some of the nation's top restaurants — and just one of them can feed a family.
The emerald-coloured eggs are in hot demand as they are high in protein and the size of eight chicken eggs.
"[We've sold] probably about 3,000 in almost three months," Queensland emu farmer Stephan Schmidt said.
This winter laying season is the first time he has taken the produce to the public."We sold 500 in the first week ..."
"I was shocked, I did not believe that was going to happen, when my wife said let's sell the eggs at in shopping centres, I said 'Who is going to buy them'."
The hunt for an elusive emerald egg
Female emus lay one egg every three days during the winter months, but according to Stephan Schmidt, an emu farmer with 20 years' experience, less than half are fertile.
"Normally the smaller eggs are infertile, we pick out the bigger eggs for the incubator to get the best chicks and often these smaller ones you wouldn't put them in an incubator anyway," he said.
One emu eggs is eight times the size of a regular chicken egg.
Emus only lay over the winter months, so supply is drying up as the season ends.
