This was a protest song from my parents generation.
This song was probably from 1939, not 1959, as Billie Holiday died in 1959 and was in very bad shape in the years leading up to her death.
She sang this song not long after her father, a WW1 vet who had been gassed in the trenches, died of pneumonia. He had been denied admission into a VA hospital because he was not white.
