Never? Really? I wonder if your "heavy rain" is the same as my "heavy rain" down here in Phuket... more like a waterfall, really.

And last night I had to turn everything off at about midnight after my UPS got zapped by lightning. Amazingly, it kept on working - no damage to the ADSL modem or PC. But I shut it all down and unplugged it just to be on the safe side.

Heavy rain will affect sat dishes (usually) so it's best to put them in a spot that affords a bit of shelter if possible.

This is nothing to do with UBC as it was a common problem with Sky dishes in the UK, too.

Yes RDN we get those "waterfalls" here in Samui as well.
But it's all about signal strength so with a well aligned disc you will see less problems. I don't get the slightest pixelation during heavy rain.

Europe generally has less signal strength since the satellite is more far away, they are all orbited over the equator.
The Sky satellite also has a much wider footprint (coverage area) than the ThaiCom satellite which gives less signal strength.

Anyway, don't blame it on UBC. Blame it on your equipment or installer..

I think it's more to do with the sheer volume of water in the air that the signal has to go through, rather than sheltering the dish from the last few feet. Although a big blob of water on the LNB won't help.

I remember losing Sky a few times in the UK, but nowhere near as often as UBC goes off. In fact, I use my UBC as a rain detector - the clouds often come from the same direction as the satellite so I get 2 or 3 minutes warning of heavy rain coming...

I remember my old house had this problem and the UBC man came and adjusted the dish - after 3 or more phone calls - and it got better.

One of the problems is the way they align the dish - some installers us the "Signal Strength" feature on the decoder (Menu / Setup / Receiver Info / Signal Value) and that always shows "Locked 255" in clear weather. I'm sure you could be 10 degrees out in any direction in clear weather, and you'd still see "255". But the guys who installed this time used a meter, so I assumed they did a more accurate job. Silly of me.

The trick, when reaching top of the scale, is to hang a wet handcarsheef (sp?) over the dish. That will attenuate the signal enough to be able to find the absolutely best point.

Slight diversion , great minds think alike! I was going to do just that at my old house but never got the nerve to go climbing onto the roof. Maybe I'll give it go at my new place.

    OK, now
