A highly offensive term referring to a Spanish-speaking person from Mexico, Central or South America, Spain, or Portugal.

This was the term used in southern California when I was growing up for any Hispanic person. I have never seen it referred to as someone of Italian nationality.

Maybe there is a different definition, depending on what country you come from.
