    Looking to purchase new PC...??

We're just about to have telephone lines extened to our village sub-district {only a couple of properties}, and would like to go ahead and have a PC in the home. I've always used laptops/notebooks {purchased in Japan/America} here as to no access. I haven't the first clue to which would be the best buys here in Fairyland. I need some help and advice from you techies. Cost isn't such a hinderence. Which local makes and models would be suitable? I don't even know what's available within the Thai market..........HELP PLEASE!?! Thanks.

Everything is available. Lots of good stuff out there. Suggest you come up with a list of what you need/want to use on a PC. Folks will be able to give you better suggestions if you do.

I told the fat bastard what I wanted and he got a case and filled it with good shit and it has ran every day for about 5 years and is just as good as the day he fired it up the first time.

    Get a Mac.

You won't have to deal with any virus, malware, or spyware stuff - this is especially useful if all you do is cruise porn sites (surprisingly, this seems to be important to some folks, and those are the #1 places where PCs get infected).

Plus, for those moments that you ABSOLUTELY need Windows, you can run Windows on the Mac (either in a Windows separately, or by rebooting into Windows) - so essentially you get 2 computers for the price of one.

    Plus, it just works.

I would be tempted to ask Marmite. He has given a lot of good advice to others in the past, uses a good computer for work and knows what he is talking about. As Norton has said, everything you could possibly want is available here in LOS. Just pick a budget.

I agree, I've bought an iMac 24 " Mac OS X Leopard not long ago and it's the best OS I've ever had (even if you don't visit porn sites). The 20 " should make anyone happy at home.

I have a dualboot WinXP (a nightmare) and Mandriva Linux on my laptop but Mac OS X Leopard is much better even if I'm a begginer with this OS.

It's a subjective point of view but once you have a Mac it's difficult to switch to another OS.

    The - :

    - Expensive
    - I don't like the mouse, replaced by a Logitech MX 1000 I used on my old PC
    - Less games available, but I don't care as I only play WoW in native mode. And most of the people play games on XBox or Playstation.

The OP asks for help with buying a PC; not an overpriced Mac nor does he want to spend 3 years choosing which version of Linux he wants to use.

What I would do, is go to your nearest PC Mall and get a shop to build something to your budget. For 20k you can get a solid machine for doing pretty much whatever you want to do.

I have the following which would be about the 20k mark now.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66Ghz with Asus Motherboard
    Good Power Supply Unit
    2 Gig RAM
    DVD Burner
    Samsung 932B 19" Monitor
    Running Windows XP Pro

I'm sure something like that would keep you happy for a few years.

Tesco has a very nice HP Tower, fully loaded, DVD writer etc... for about 14,000 THB

and it's a HP Compaq, so less risk than the Somchai version fully loaded with virus and malware

Ask your Tesco guy to load original XP for an extra 500 THB cash

i just bought a HP Pavillion.

    2.5g duo core.
    1 gig ram.
    500gig HD.
    19in widescreen.
    etcetc
    For 15,000 baht.

Yeah it could do with some ram but meh, its all brand new and covered by a decent warranty.

Didnt do the 500baht 'original' xp install as they will not give you the 'original' disc, this is an extra 4000 baht....
i will install my 'original' software instead.

Either make a list of which features are important for you to get more specific advice, or go to the nearest mall to inform yourself what is available.

If you live out in the sticks and know nothing about computers, like myself, you may be better off buying a brand-name set rather than have something assembled which you may find difficult to get serviced later.

It just seems incongruous to buy hi tech computer stuff from Tesco.

They do have a very good vegetable section.

Trying to remember why we went to Tesco's in England..........

    aaah,,Waitrose was closed.

Nope, not even in the UK if memory serves.

But there's a wide selection of brands selling the same vegetable oil, tinned sardines and nam-pla at our local Tesco's.

Yes. Also, even though you may pay a bit more buy it from a good shop in Surin. You will get a lot better response with small glitches from them.

I just purchased a new HP Pavilion from a shop in Roiet and they are always glad to help if I have problem with SW installations and the like. They even sent out a guy to the house which is 20km away for free to help setup internet connection.

Not really. I don't think it's that straightforward.

That being said a good quality PSU is essential imo, as is XP Pro rather than V****a.

If RS is near a Tesco, I would suggest looking there first as they do seem to have some pretty good deals.

Unless you are building an HTPC or media station unfortunately, then Vista becomes essential.

I am still using XP Pro on my laptop though.

Waiting for my blu-ray drive to arrive then I will do a photo thread of my HTPC assembly.

Looks like I will be going for the 780g AMD chipset and an Athlon X2 Processor at the moment.

I will seek advice on the net and from Jedi overclock in Panthip before committing.
