    Browser can't find internet

My son's computer was hit by a virus so he had Windows XP reinstalled. Now neither Explorer or Firefox will link to the internet. However Microsoft messenger has no problems.

I've re-enabled IE and Firefox in the firewall but still no success. Message is "can't find server".

    We're on a broadband link.

    Any ideas ?

Have you re-installed your LAN adaptor ?

Go into Device Manager and make sure you have a working network adaptor

But MSM is working so the LAN must be up and running I think. If I go to "Network Connections" it says connected.

Sorry I missed that bit in your OP

I would try a different DNS server next

    I am using
    208.67.220.220
    208.109.132.208

    They work for me

    Network Connections>local Area connection>properties>InternetProtocol>properties

Tried inputting the DNS change but didn't seem to make any difference. However Firefox can now open the Yahoo log in page and the Gmail loging page. Try to log in and get the message "Connection to the Server Reset".

    All other sites can't reach.

I wonder if it's a memory or hard disc space problem. Drive C has 2 gig left.

That's not it - I'm on a similarly small amount on my PC at home.

I had serious connectivity issues last night and this morning. Seems OK now.

    Probably the rain this weekend.

Do you have a router or directly connected to ADSL modem?

Errr...or possibly the 46.5 bottles of beer you consumed on Saturday?

(Liar, I only had cans and towers)

Yeah, I know. I took it slow this weekend, didn't want to make anyone feel like a lightweight.

Try a couple of simple checks for Firefox.

Tools, Options, Advanced, Network, Settings, Select Direct Connection to Internet (green button).

Tools, Options, "When Firefox Starts:" select "show my home page". In homepage area type the homepage you want i.e. "http://www.google.com".

Hehehe, you were in a right state when you left the club. Well funny. Chinthee was going to come after you as he thought you wouldn't be able to make it to the hotel ok.
