Edmond The Roofer Self-Amputates His Leg.

So, I’z been renovating a place for a month or so, and the time came to do the roof, getting rid of the tiles and putting on them metal sheets with an inch of PU Foam stuck underneath.

I do like to help out while renovating places, as it’s always good to learn different techniques etc etc, plus there’s the opportunity to tell the contractors how to do their jobs, and point out what they’re doing wrong while shouting at them etc etc.

Anyway, all the sheeties were laid out flat in the garden, patiently awaiting their horizontal crucifixion, when evidently I got a bit too close while coming back from feeding the fish.

One cheeky lil fooker went knee-high with a slicing movement last seen when Pepe played in Turkey.

It got a lot more Vietnam War Movie-esque during the 2 hours it took to get it seen to.

Me, the kid and 2contractors here, so I couldn’t leave the kid, or take the kid, aswe’d return to no contractors and one empty house. Edith in theoffice, so she came straight back and I, like the Vinnie Jones I am,drove meself to the hospital.

Which the staff of, were, rather relaxed, I would say politely. In to the ICU, needle into be deltoid, the gaping wound washed out with something that stung to high lulu, then couldn’t feel anything in that area besides some tugging etc as they stitched up the ol’badboy.

The check-in lady asked what happened.

    Ahhh, metal sheeeeet.
    You know metal sheets?
*Laughs*oh I know metal sheets. I see this everyday.

After seeing the notes it was apparently a 6cm laceration, they obviously left out a zero by accident. Cashier Man was very happy in telling me that my ATM Accident Insurance isn’t accepted at that hospital so a phone scan later and I’m 743 baht poorer, but with the Line ID of a very nice nurse.

    Conclusion:

Now I don’t think metal roof sheets are inherently evil, it’s just that they’ve got the short end of the stick, they can justly feel done over. Squashed out then screwed into outdoor framework with no hope of escape, being slapped with the elements for eternity, they feel frustrated, and if they get the chance, they’re gonna lash out. You would too.

    Stay safe folks.

    Beware of the roofing.

Ouch. Hurts just to see that.

Which hospital sewed up your leg for 743 baht? That’s amazing.

I went to the closest one on Google Maps. It had been 2 hours and I didn't much feel like a schmancy road trip.

Though I do now realize that they completely neglected to give me any information whatsoever, about everything and anything.

Didn't tell me about the stitches but read on the notes that they are 'catgut'.

But more importantly, they didn't tell me anything at all about aftercare. Do they dissolve? Do I need to go to take them out? When would I need to take them out? I've got a big ass bandage around me leg, how long before I can take it off??

You get what you pay for.

These are open questions to TD doctors and Zanzibar/Filipino nurses.

Change the bandage and clean the wound daily, get some cream antibiotic stuff or betadine to keep the gangrene down, after 4-5 days take the bandage off and after a week or ten days, cut and pull the stitches out yourself.

    Wait a lulu.

The animal-based fibers became known as catgut, even though they had nothing to do with the innards of felines. A version of catgut sutures is still used to this day in some surgeries, especially in cases where the stitches can't easily be removed, as catgut naturally dissolves in about 90 days.

It is naturally degraded by the body's own proteolytic enzymes. Full tensile strength remains for at least 7 days, and absorption is complete by 90 days.

Yep, always be wary of metal. In fact even if you’re up to date they advise getting a tetanus shot.

If you also had two or three internal stitches they will be catgut and eventually absorbed.

Or 'catgut' may be just the quaint Thai way of describing the external stitches, after someone once heard that term.

First time I went to Thighland I walked into the edge of a low corrugated iron roof and almost scalped myself. Luckily it got me about 1cm above the hairline and it's amazing how much even a small amount of hair protects you. Still cut in, but not as bad as it could have been if lower.

    Commiserations.

Edith cleaned it up this morning before going to work, mentioned that it was around 1cm away from slicing me tendon at the back of me knee.

Bet that wouldn't have been a jolly good time.

One week later, went back to get the stitches out.

Still not fully healed. :/ The nurses didn't seem to find this a good thing.

New course of antibiotics, amoxiclav 1000g, keeping it wrapped up tight with a decent cleaning everyday.
