Be nice now! must be tough drilling a hole on land when you have nothing else to think about apart from that, logistics must be a nightmare, no subsea calculations, tides to worry about, if there is a problem you could have to walk at least a 100 yards away, not to mention you only have a third of the equipment to look after, no wonder they have time for FUN!
Crew changes must be a nightmare too!
Mate every time I move the rig and camp it's 120 semi trailer loads and pulling the whole rig to bits in 50 deg heat in the middle of a sand storm what do you gay boys do pull the ancor then pull each other off for the next few while you are movingOriginally Posted by Airportwo
You say that like it's a bad thing atleast when we start drilling we start at the topOriginally Posted by Airportwo
You also have twice the tradesmen offshore to look after itOriginally Posted by Airportwo

Now your honest side is showing, have you ever considered working towards being an offshore hand?
I was just going dfor the post count! (1k )
I have done crewchange I stated, in the past for some years.
Recently I was in the Caspian and waited 15 days for 'whirly' due to weather and there was only 1 chopper and it kept breaking down, the crews were working 14 x 14, they were well impressed!

Well if we're going to swap tales, I was on a mountain in New Guinea. No roads 24 hour clouds. We were down to the last sack of potatoes when one of the crazy chopper pilots volunteered to try to fly in some groceries to the rig. We could hear the chup chup chup and a line with a basket full of boxes of food suddenly appeared thro' the clouds and grounded about 30 yards from the derrick. Never did see the chopper.
After divorce I considered working offshore again but have been out of it for 14 years.
Now im 54 and I consider myself to old.
Reading all this thread there may be hope for me yet.
I agree with alot of the comments made, coming from Aberdeen so called softies (come and have a go if ya think ya hard enough! )..I came to try my luck in Thailand/Asia.
No one has mentioned the fact that the work comes in scraps, the visas for neighbouring countries take forever as companys on the service side are shite and lie out thier asses. Or the fact that if you are from the West that you could be at operator level but they still pursue you to go in at Engineer level even though you may not have a scooby!
TOT
Here we have one of the lower forms of rig life called a service hand. They get passed around from rig to rig getting a hard time from the rig crews as well as management and there own people in town. They dont really have a home and just wonder around, are normaly a little bit weird but no where near as foked up as most geologist. They also like to borrow stuff and normaly dont have any of the tool they require to do their jobOriginally Posted by drskosha
