I heard on CNN that McCain is completely avoiding the words 'Bush' and 'Republican' in his latest speeches. To distance himself from his own party and president at this late point in his long career as a Washington insider borders on surreal.

McCain advisor (former Senator) Phil Graham was a major player in deregulating the finance industry. He is a major reason that credit default swaps are unregulated and wrecking havoc on the US economy

Try realclearpolitics.com, it has lots of polls and articles from the mainstream political spectrum. The link below shows Obama squeeking by in the electoral college by taking just 3 more states than Kerry did (N.Mexico, Colorado and Iowa). If it's close, I think those are the 3 states to look at, with Colorado deciding the whole thing. But if the economy turns to sh*t , Obama may win handily. One reason he's jumped ahead this week is the chaos in the financial markets.

    RealClearPolitics - Electoral Map
I also take a look at RealClearPolitics.com but they are really a poll of polls. And I like to take a look at each of the polls and the data of the poll - what questions where asked, what the break down appears to be (young/old, red/blue, white/black, male/female). You can see on the RCP site that many of the recent state polls done by Rassmussen have been FOX New/Rassmusen polls. But not all of their recent state polls have been.

Rassmussen is suppose to be an independent polling place. They won't even do paid polling for anyone because they say they want to maintain their independent status. That is why I question them partnering with FOX on any poll.

McCain will work hard to distance himself from GWB economic policy.

Obama will redouble his effort in portraying McCain's economic policy as more of the same as GWB's.
You hit the nail on the head.

Also, blame and point fingers, and then offer a solution that will help.

(Even though the next government won't have much impact on the current state of economic affairs, IMO.)

Neither candidates have a solution. Just like the Fed, the Treasury, the Bush admin and the Congress don't.

Agree. Further, a President taking too much credit for or too much blame for economy is misplaced. The economy cannot be completely controlled by government nor should it be. Think it's more a function of a particular President being in office at the right time or the wrong time.

Economic policy (balanced budget, oversight, etc.) of an administration certainly effect the economy but consequence of a given policy seldom are reflected in the time frame of any administration.

    Totally agree.

Very foolish and silly that some are already playing the "point the finger and blame" game while trying to tell the public that their own plan "can help."

    DJIA to 8,000?

It's not that far. I'd put cash into the markets at 8,000.

Ya, and Greenspan is rearing his head. *groan* Everyone wanted the easy ride, not only bankers but welfare recipient zero-down wannabe homeowners, too. What's the fix? Dunno. China is licking its lips.

As far as the campaign goes, we have the voting machine malfunctions, and the distrust of them for lack of a paper trail. New voter registrations, and some very dubious election results in the last 2 elections.

Election day could be a mess

Worries over registration surge, failure-prone equipment, new procedures

    By Mary Pat Flaherty
    updated 11:55 p.m. PT, Wed., Sept. 17, 2008

Faced with a surge in voter registrations leading up to Nov. 4, election officials across the country are bracing for long lines, equipment failures and confusion over polling procedures that could cost thousands the chance to cast a ballot.
The crush of voters will strain a system already in the midst of transformation, with jurisdictions introducing new machines and rules to avoid the catastrophe of the deadlocked 2000 election and the lingering controversy over the 2004 outcome.

Even within the past few months, cities and counties have revamped their processes: Nine million voters, including many in the battleground states of Ohio, Florida and Colorado, will use equipment that has changed since March.
But the widespread changes meant to reassure the public have also increased the potential for trouble.

john mccain on how he wants the insane deregulation in the banking industry to be introduced to health care....
Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.
    http://www.contingencies.org/septoct08/mccain.pdf

this was taken from an article he wrote for the sept./oct 2008 issue of 'contingencies', the magazine of the american academy of actuaries.

and today he's trying to come off as someone who's going to battle against 'fat cats' on wall street?

once the obama campaign and the left leaning 527s get this out to the american public, all those senior citizens who watched their retirement savings whipsaw this past week are going to think twice about voting for mccain simply because he's old like them.

plain and simple....this man is not fit to govern.

this is not promising for the obama campaign....

The AP-Yahoo News poll used the unique methodology of Knowledge Networks, a Menlo Park, Calif., firm that interviews people online after randomly selecting and screening them over telephone. Numerous studies have shown that people are more likely to report embarrassing behavior and unpopular opinions when answering questions on a computer rather than talking to a stranger.
Other techniques used in the poll included recording people's responses to black or white faces flashed on a computer screen, asking participants to rate how well certain adjectives apply to blacks, measuring whether people believe blacks' troubles are their own fault, and simply asking people how much they like or dislike blacks.

i agree, but nearly twice less ignorant than the republicans.

they also voted for Bush twice, so their stupidity has never been doubted.

    ^ conceded.

But I get little solace in those stats.

I feel deeply cynical about this election and Obama's chances of winning I believe it is a pivotal moment in history and have little confidence that the majority of merkans will make the enlightened choice.

surely you have realised by now that brit is the keenest, most astute political analyst on the board.

only jet gets close in terms of offering so little.

In brit's case, why write a paragraph when 5 words will do the trick.

^ For a mod, should we thus assume you are an astute US political pundit? Thought you were Welsh.
The left is so manic on this race, they are not even listening to the points of issue. This is a pity, as usual.

What nonsense . . . whenever an issue is brought up, the other side obfuscates it, this has nothing to do with left or right (and the Dems are certainly NOT left in a global context), and bringing this upall the time is just plainly stupid.

Why not make a start and STICK to issues, even when they concern your interests, instead of deflecting things all the time, Jet? I find you to be more guilty than most of doing what you decry as a 'lefty' thing.

The few that are on the left are on the fringe.

It's the Independents in the Center that will decide, as the others have their strong leaning.

Jet, where are you reading this?

The US does not really have a "left." Only a small percentage of the populations is considered to be on the "left" and they tend to vote for the Democrats who are Center, and have having moving right since 1990.

Where are you reading this stuff?

Very off-topic garbage in this thread.
