If you were being pinned down ,what would you say as your favourite book ?

    I'll have Sanislaw Lem

    The Cyberaid published 1965

A wacky and humorous sc-fi book of short fables about 2 robot inventors,
friends but rivals, who travel the universe constructing things .

In the story The Electronic Bard , Trurl tries to build a machine that can write poetry

First Trurl collected eight hundred and twenty tons of books on cybernetics and twelve thousand tons of the finest poetry, then sat down to read it all. Whenever he felt he just couldn't take another chart or equation, he would switch over to verse, and vice versa.
when built , he has his piss taking friend Klapacious over and challenges him to test it ,
    which he does -

"Have it compose a poem—a poem about a haircut !
But lofty, noble, tragic, timeless, full of love, treachery, retribution, quiet heroism in the face of certain doom!
Six lines, cleverly rhymed, and every word beginning with the letter S !!"

"And why not throw in a full exposition of the general theory of nonlinear automata while you're at it?" growled Trurl.
"You can't give it such idiotic—" But he didn't finish.
A melodious voice filled the hall with the following:

    Seduced, shaggy Samson snored.
    She scissored short.
Sorely shorn, Soon shackled slave, Samson sighed,
    Silently scheming,
    Sightlessly seeking
    Some savage, spectacular suicide.

"Well, what do you say to that?" asked Trurl, his arms folded proudly.
    But Klapaucius was already shouting:
"Now all in g! A sonnet, trochaic hexameter, about an old cyclotron who kept sixteen artificial mistresses, blue and radioactive, had four wings, three purple pavilions, two lacquered chests, each containing exactly one thousand medallions bearing the likeness of Czar Murdicog the Headless…"

"Grinding gleeful gears, Gerontogyron grabbed / Giggling gynecobalt-6o golems," began the machine,
but Trurl leaped to the console, shut off the power and turned, defending the machine with his body.
"Enough!" he said, hoarse with indignation.
"How dare you waste a great talent on such drivel?
    etc

Tai-Pan - James Clavell, could have also chosen King Rat or Noble House also both by Clavell but Tai-Pan just shades it.

Looks good that I'll look out for it.

My favorite book.. very difficult to say.
The one I've probably read more times than the others.

    Mao II by Don DeLillo
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

    Interesting bloke.

In August 1937, he placed third in a clam-eating tournament on Block Island by eating 84 cherrystone clams.
