Jatuporn: "I dare you to stage a coup"

UDD to rally at army, air force HQ

UDD to rally at army, air force HQ

    Online news: Breakingnews

The anti-government United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) is planning to rally at headquarters of the army and air force to ask for clarification on coup rumours, UDD core leader Natthawut Saikua told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

“At 12am on Friday, the red-shirts will rally in front of the army headquarters to ask deputy army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha about the report on possible military coup” Mr Natthawut stated.

A stage for the rally, entitled “make friends with brave soldiers, fight against dictator’s followers”, will be set up at the headquarters and the rally will end at about 5pm on the same day, he said.

The red-shirts will also rally at the headquarters of air force next Tuesday, Feb 2, to ask for clarification on the coup reports from air force chief.

Jatuporn Promphan, another core leader of UDD, dared the armed forces to stage a coup. He said the red-shirts will take to the streets to fight against military coup by all means.

“The red-shirts will surround all military tanks whenever they spot them”, Mr Jatuporn said.

Talk about making trying to make something out of nothing. Definitely an orchestrated campaign by the Reds to attempt to 'turn up the heat' before the big day next month.

Stage a coup. Yes...I guess it is a bit of theatre, isn't it?

There is sure to be a coup now as an unanswered challenge in LOS would be a loss of face.

An interesting move, aimed at causing a division in the army, that would lead not to a coup but to civil war.
Not something I wish to see, but probably the only way Thailand will ever be able to (eventually) move itself forward.

Yes, and don't forget all those retired Generals who've now joined Pheua Thai. Their Greng Jai networks include thousands of still active soldiers. There are also thousands of disgruntled army personnel whose careers have effectively been frozen since 2006 because they were not part of the Anupong network or were too closely associated with the Thaksin network. Not to mention the police, they have no reason to feel any love for the current bossmen, far from it.

Did you see the front page of today's Bangkok Post? Very odd.

If there were a Ladbrokes here I wonder what odds they would give on a coup ? On the face of it it doesn't seem like a probable good bet at the moment . What would the military have to gain ? They have already demonstrated their own ineptitude at running the country .
Having assisted the Democrats into gaining power its unlikely they would want to be in the hot seat again. As long as the govournment keeps approving military spending on submarines and the like they're probably content to keep a wary eye on things....... at least until the reds look like regaining control.

As for ' Making friends with brave soldiers...' not a bad idea if you might meet them on the streets one day pointing their guns at you.

All the signs are there for a conflict rather than a coup, (or a coup to cancel election, turning into civil conflict) as in wether elections will be held and even then if the outcome is accepted.
The situation at now seems like a tinderbox where regional conflicts could rapidly escalate into civil conflict, allegiences are already well defined with the last few years of political turmoil.
It bothers me that there are elements of Thai society that could heal the divisions and the potential for conflict, but they won't.
I feel sad that Thailand is being led down an inevital path, and that Thais seem resigned to conflict and self destruction. I hope that the outcome would be a better, more democratic Thailand, but the reality is more likely to be a more totalitarian regime with a bigger body count.

Yes, they give a toss. They're scared shitless of being caught in the middle of a civil war between two or more sides in a fight most people want nothing to do with. They'd much rather get on with not seeing their country go down the tubes, making a living, and not having to duck bullets. A fairly understandable attitude in my opinion.

But even if they did 'heal' their own little hissy-fits how would that help the 90% of disenfranchised? Thaksin gets his cash? The Yellows get relief from socialism?

    Wow - great..

So if you are Thai - if I understand your previous posts - and I read your monotonous reactions to everything here - may i assume you are "first name Farang" and "last name Thai" (or more likely ThaiChin)? Cause other than the Ungkraporn family - few other thai-farang are willing to shake off their fake mummy-trophy-wife-status for real life.. and you seem to be pretty firmly in the camp of poor Thai people are just stupid shite (esp if last name is farang). Come on reply - so I can hit you with an LM charge!!

News reports about an imminent coup are only a rumour spread by those who do not want to see it happen, former army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin said on Friday.

    Sonthi: Coup just a rumour

I am told a coup is going to happen in before the 26th of February.

He is credible source that has been dead on most of the time about Thai politics.

Heartfelt sentiment, Rob - which most would agree. One thing we should always keep in mind....regardless of said divisions here and there, one need only observe contemporary Thai history and events to understand that the definitive powers to be and ultimate puppet masters have never ever promoted nor cared to see such open, progressive, and democratic states of mind within the broader Thailand infrastructures. All this whimsy becomes fodder for the cycled rhetoric that has certainly reflected Thai history of the last several decades. Deeper sinister hands are at work, and always have been. While we examine and explore the continuing surface events on a stage that has been created for us - still knowone cares to entangle themselves within the curtain of the real theatre.

Indeed, Bob. And contrary to popular delusions and fabricated stereotype, it might be easier to suggest that the 'average' Thai really understands what is and what isn't. The deepened designed social system prevents them from 'choosing' sides. A dharmatma hand-cuff {sort to speak}.

I think there is 50 Satang off the price of a tin of those Malaysian baked beans at Tesco at the moment, probably better off surrounding there.
