Not adopting your domicile's passport doesn't mean you are not an immigrant.

If you have no intention to move back to Australia and remain in Thailand you are an immigrant, not an expat. (Replace all 'you' with 'one' to generalise the comment)

Had this discussion with BG, he provided a definition from the dictionary . . . and it clearly didn't support his situation.

Expats and immigrants are not the same thing. Most westerners living in Thailand are immigrants, not expats . . . it's a definition, nothing more

Yet many here on the board call themselves expats when they are, in fact, immigrants but that term has a connotation which is not as desirable.

Right. Legally you are not an immigrant, but for the sake of this discussion the distinction was made between 'immigrant' and 'expat'.

Usually, expat visas are work-related . . . well, in SG, HK, MY and J anyway.

The distinction drawn was between someone who intends to stay in a country and those who are there for a limited time, usually associated with work.

    Kind of confusing.

There has always been quite a lot of violence in the UK. When I was a kid, you could randomly get the shit kicked out of you for your haircut, the kind of music you liked, or the football team you supported, just as but a few examples.

An island geography breeds a certain amount of paranoia, we have been on a heightened state of alarm for many centuries, with people ready to go off on a minute's notice to defend our shores against those pesky wogs from over the water. When we actually built the world's best Navy and thus Empire, we transported the UK's hooligans, thugs, hardmen and lunatics off to foreign shores to terrorize the locals and steal anything worth having. In fact, the same charming, suave young lads you might meet in the Dog's Bollocks in Patters, or on the news smashing up some foreign shopping centre on a football soiree, are the same kids that built that very Empire.
The only difference between times of old and modern PC-CCTV Britain is a lack of traditional heavy production work to keep people busy, and thus too tired to beat the shit out of each other, and a modern Police Force (that used to be the envy of the world) is now engaged in filling out Kafka-esque documentation in some bizarre social experiment devised by the touchy-feely New Labour wendies..

    Hilarity ensues.

Expat, immigrant or refuge? There are Farang in Thailand belonging to all these categories.

Expats - on a time-limited work package. Clearly intending to return home (or move to work in another place) eventually.

Immigrants - made Thailand their permanent home. Most people married and raising children here are in this category, most retirees as well. Intention is relevant, visa and citizenship status is not.

Refugees - not intending to return home since they fled it due to circumstances (now) beyond their control. Running from the law, child support etc.

Rigger - i said the same thing about a spellin the army to a couple of soldiers who had chosen a career in the army, they said "why do we have to work with a load of scumbags that don't want to be there and if the shit hits the fan you would nt want one covering your back would you". To which I said "point taken".

As for beating up the staff in hospital...Beyond me why would anyone do that..
Just plug em in to the mains - their no use to man or beast.

    No history of immigration?

How did they get from 0 white men to 20 plus million in 200 years?

In 2006, 22% of Australians were born overseas. In 2009, 10.7% of Britains born overseas.

Maybe the Australians have more space so they don't shit each other so much.

LONDON (Reuters) - Men have become so openly affectionate with each other using mobile technology they've taken to signing off text messages to male friends with a kiss (x), giving rise to a new generation dubbed "Metrotextuals."
New research from mobile phone firm T-Mobile reveals nearly a quarter of men (22 percent) regularly include a kiss on texts to their male mates, T-Mobile said in an emailed statement.
"Metrotextuality" is most widespread among 18-24 year old males with three quarters (75 percent) regularly sealing texts with a kiss and 48 percent admitting that the practice has become commonplace amongst their group of friends.
Nearly a quarter of this age group (23 percent) even appreciate an "x' in a text exchange from people that aren't close friends.
But it's not just younger men that have become Metrotextuals -- one in 10 men over 55 often completes a text to another male with a kiss, according to the poll.
