Had this discussion with BG, he provided a definition from the dictionary . . . and it clearly didn't support his situation.

Expats and immigrants are not the same thing. Most westerners living in Thailand are immigrants, not expats . . . it's a definition, nothing more

Right. Legally you are not an immigrant, but for the sake of this discussion the distinction was made between 'immigrant' and 'expat'.

Usually, expat visas are work-related . . . well, in SG, HK, MY and J anyway.

The distinction drawn was between someone who intends to stay in a country and those who are there for a limited time, usually associated with work.

Kind of confusing.

Expat, immigrant or refuge? There are Farang in Thailand belonging to all these categories.

Expats - on a time-limited work package. Clearly intending to return home (or move to work in another place) eventually.

Immigrants - made Thailand their permanent home. Most people married and raising children here are in this category, most retirees as well. Intention is relevant, visa and citizenship status is not.

Refugees - not intending to return home since they fled it due to circumstances (now) beyond their control. Running from the law, child support etc.
