Iranian plot to kill Saudi ambassador thwarted, U.S. officials say

Saudi ambassador to the United States Adel al-Jubeir was targeted for assassination, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says.





Washington (CNN) -- U.S. agents disrupted an Iranian assassination-for-hire scheme targeting Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States, U.S. officials said Tuesday.
Elements of the Iranian government directed the alleged plan, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said.
A naturalized U.S. citizen holding Iranian and U.S. passports and a member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard face conspiracy charges connected with the plot.
"In addition to holding these individual conspirators accountable for their alleged role in this plot, the United States is committed to holding Iran accountable for its actions," Holder said.
A spokesman for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad described the accusations as a "fabrication" by U.S. authorities attempting to distract American citizens.
"They want to take the public's mind off the serious domestic problems they're facing these days and scare them with fabricated problems outside the country," spokesman Ali Akbar Javanfekr said.
The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington thanked U.S. authorities for stepping in.

I can not vouch for the accuracy or otherwise of this. Several people might notice however the convenience of this allegation being splashed across the Corporate western media at this point in time, when it is actually Israel that is in the spotlight of World diplomatic opinion.

To state the obvious however, if the Zionist piss-boys that run the US for the sole benefit of tiny Israel were to cease their mischief making with Iran (assassinations, cyber attacks, massive sanctions, never ending threats of invasion or bombing etc) then such forebearance would likely be reciprocated.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - U.S. allegations that Iran plotted to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Washington are a "mischievous, foolish" attempt to fuel tension between Tehran and Riyadh, a senior Iranian official said on Wednesday.

U.S. authorities said on Tuesday that they had broken up a plot by two men linked to Iran's security agencies to kill the Saudi envoy, Adel al-Jubeir. One man was arrested last month while the other was believed to be in Iran.
Parliament speaker Ali Larijani, echoing Iran's official stance, denied the charges in an open session of parliament.
"These claims are vulgar ... It is a childish and amateur game ... We believe that our neighbours in the region are very well aware that America is using this story to ruin our relationship with Saudi Arabia," Larijani told parliament in a speech broadcast live on state radio.
Saudi-Iranian tensions have increased since March, when Saudi Arabia sent troops to help Bahrain's Sunni rulers quell pro-democracy protesters led by the island's Shi'ite majority, which has long complained of sectarian discrimination.
Bahrain accused Iran of being behind the unrest, a charge denied by Tehran and by Bahraini Shi'ite political parties.
U.S. President Barack Obama called the alleged assassination plot a "flagrant violation of U.S. and international law" and Saudi Arabia said it was "despicable."
Hasan Qashqavi, Iran's deputy foreign minister, ruled out any rupture of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, saying: "Such baseless allegations cannot have the least impact on our ties," the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
But some Iranian analysts disagreed.
"It will harm the ties (with Saudi Arabia) ... and in 2012 Tehran and Washington might even have a military confrontation," said analyst Saeed Leylaz.
The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear programme is strictly for peaceful purposes.
Saudi Arabia has indirectly accused Iran of stirring strife in its oil-rich Eastern Province, home to much of the kingdom's Shi'ite minority and the scene of protests earlier this year.
Larijani said Washington's "fabricated allegations" were aimed at diverting attention from popular uprisings in the Middle East, which Iran says were inspired by its own 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the U.S.-backed Shah.
"America wants to divert attention from problems it faces in the Middle East, but the Americans cannot stop the wave of Islamic awakening by using such excuses," Larijani said.

The alleged plot was facilitated by a compliant FBI sting. The evidence was allegedly a telephoned comment, presumbaly in Farsi, by an alleged government employee who is alleged to have said, "Do it now". The question asked was "Shall I send some money to your personal bank account"

The US authorities didn't tell the Saudi Ambassador for weeks after they had knowledge of the plot.
