A New Zealander and his British lover living in Dubai are expected to be charged with having illegal sex after they called police to arrest his former Brazilian girlfriend who was threatening the pair with a knife.
The jilted woman, named only as Priscilla, allegedly took revenge last month by wrecking former Aucklander Toby Carroll's apartment, threatening him and trying to attack him with a knife when she caught him having sex with his new girlfriend, Briton Danielle Spencer, 25, Britain's Daily Mail website reported on Thursday.
Spencer is believed to have locked herself in the bathroom while Carroll called police.
Priscilla allegedly smashed various items in Carroll's apartment before police arrived.
Police arrested all three and locked them up in Bur Dubai police station, where they spent Christmas and New Year.
The two women were forced to share the same cell as they await trial.
Police said the case had been transferred to the public prosecutor for further investigation.
Carroll and Spencer are facing possible charges of having sex outside marriage and behaving indecently.
Sex outside marriage in Dubai is illegal.
The Brazilian woman faces charges of violence and criminal damage.
"When officers arrived they came across a bizarre scene", a police source said.
"The trio were shouting at each other and all hell was breaking loose. The officers had to try and calm them down. Lawyers are still trying to decide what offences to charge them with. But they have been made fully aware these are serious allegations which the courts will pursue vigorously."
A spokesperson said the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade was aware of the case and the New Zealand Consulate-General in Dubai had been providing consular assistance.
"We can't go into specifics or release any further details at this stage for legal and privacy reasons," the spokesperson told NZPA.
Carroll, in his 30s, is a property analyst at HSBC Middle East in Dubai. HSBC confirmed he was still an employee and remained in police custody.
Spencer is believed to have studied at Dubai University and has been working in the property market since 2005.
Many foreigners have fallen foul of local laws in the United Arab Emirates which strictly control drinking and ban sex outside marriage. Public displays of affection are also illegal.
