Monaghan coach calls for fines for abusive fans
Chris Brereton
December 15, 2010
WARRINGTON: Joel Monaghan's new coach at Warrington Wolves will demand the English Super League fine opposition sides if the abuse he receives becomes too much for the player to handle during his debut season.
Warrington and Canberra may be 17,000 kilometres and a hemisphere apart, but Tony Smith, the former St George and Illawarra Steelers player and now Wolves coach, accepts Monaghan's famous photographed indiscretion will continue to haunt him in England as much as it did in Australia.
Smith acknowledges that opposition fans are eagerly awaiting their first glimpse of Monaghan. He is also aware that the Origin star will be subjected to a verbal barrage over his simulated sex act with a dog, but has backed the player and believes there is a precedent he can use to silence abusive fans.

Last June, Castleford Tigers were fined £40,000 ($64,000) after their supporters aimed homophobic abuse at Celtic Crusaders winger Gareth Thomas, who had revealed he was gay. And Smith is more than ready to demand that the league bosses do the same when Super League returns in February.
"If it's good fun then fair enough, but if it goes overboard there are rules and regulations," Smith warned.
"Joel is fine with it and knows he will cop some. He understands there will be some repercussions but hopefully it will not be too hurtful and harmful. It needs to be done with some thought and compassion."
Smith implored Super League fans to remember their own foolish indiscretions before mocking the 28-year-old.
"Joel and his family are good people and he has made an error in judgement like a lot of young people," he added. "Particularly when we are inebriated, we do silly things and we regret them. There will be some stigma that will be with Joel for some time but he is a good professional and [will] do his talking on the field."
