Highest Mountain in the World Gets High Speed Internet
With the introduction of 3G high-speed internet to Katmandu in the Himalayas, Ncell, the Nepalese internet provider, announced Thursday that the base station in the Khumbu Valley near Mount Everest would be expanded allowing users to access cyberspace at far cheaper rates than the present satellite phone communications.
It was in 1953 that the first men, Hillary and Norgay, conquered Mount Everest for the first time, but the world was slow in hearing the news as the information had to be sent by foot messenger to an airport where a plane took it to news-outlets. Now, that same information will take a mere 4 seconds to be broadcast worldwide via high-speed internet.
"The change," says experienced mountaineer of the Himalayas, Veikka Gustafsson, 'will be significant but positive' and will lead to advancements in education and opportunities for the local Nepalese people."
There will always be a need for the sherpa guides if one wishes to make it to the summit of Everest, but now, as the trek is traversed, climbers will be able to broadcast their progress in text and video messages - in real-time.
