A German expat living on Indonesia's Lombok Island is in protective police custody after hundreds of Muslim villagers attacked his home and set alight to his motorbike for allegedly insulting Islam.

The Jakarta Globe newspaper reported how Stephen Alexander, 35, approached a village chief and accused villagers of decapitating one of the statues in his front garden, threatening to tell the police if the culprit was not found within two weeks.

A local by the name of Mustan is reported as saying: "He came carrying the statue head and got angry at Amalsah, the village chief, accusing the villagers of damaging his statues and demanding to know what sort of Muslims we were."

Villagers had just finished Tarawih (evening prayers during Ramadan) and, according to Mustan, were deeply hurt by Alexander's words.

Following the altercation, the German national who has lived on the island for ten years and has an Indonesian wife, fled into a nearby forest while hundreds of villagers are believed to have attacked his villa and set alight to his motorbike.
The expat was arrested by police after emerging from the forest and is now being held in protective police custody pending further investigation.
In an unrelated but similar case, American expat Luke Gregory Lloyd, 64, is currently facing six years in jail after he was charged with blasphemy and immigration violations after disrupting a late-night Koran recital in a mosque near his house in Kuta, Lombok, on August 22.
Police allege the American expatriate barged into the prayer session with his shoes on and unplugged a microphone.
Lloyd, whose home was also attacked, denies the charges

Six years for blasphemy is pretty tame, so he should think himself lucky.

Christian sentenced to life imprisonment for hurting the religious feelings of Muslims when he sent a SMS deemed blasphemous.

Note that in a Sharia court the word of a Muslim supersedes the testimony of any number of non-Muslims.

Regards the OP, if this guy chooses to live amongst a community full of Muslims he forfeits the right to react like he might do if living amongst his own people.

I don't personally believe that's a healthy way to live but considering one is living in a society that is light years away from the way one might usually live it's not a bad idea to tow the party line.

An example might be :
