New York passers-by leave good Samaritan to die

New York passers-by leave good Samaritan to die

At least 25 people walked past Alfredo Tale-Yax, police say

A homeless man in New York City who was stabbed after coming to a woman's aid was left to die while passers-by ignored him, CCTV footage has shown.

Police said that at least 25 people walked past Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax as he bled to death on a pavement in Queens.

The 31-year-old from Guatemala was repeatedly stabbed by a man as he intervened during the attack last week.

The footage shows it was an hour and a half before somebody tried to rouse him and contacted the emergency services.

In the security camera video, a woman is followed by a man, who then appears to attack her.

"How can you walk past somebody when see you them lying there in need of help"

Mr Tale-Yax walks toward them. Off-camera he is stabbed several times while trying to help the woman.

The camera captures the apparent attacker running away.

Mr Tale-Yax gives chase but collapses. He is seen lying in the street fatally wounded, as several people walk past him.

Relatives of Mr Tale-Yax said he had recently lost his job and his home.

Oh, of course, it's the USA!
I've seen this happen in Canada, even when I was a kid. We'd stop to help the person and get scolded for trying to help a rubbie.
Unfortunately these days, pretending to be injured and laying near death is sometimes a ruse used by con artists. A passerby stops to help and the "injured" guy mugs the person.

I read this today, No shock, it's the US. One fucked-up place. As much as they like to try to portray otherwise, they are the 3rd world.

You got to admit its a sad state of affairs when people just leave others to die in the street, doubt if any of those that passed would have helped the woman either if they had seen that happening.

There is a worse case than this, NYC as well. I think the name was Kitty Genovice. Stabbed 20-some times, crawled a couple of blocks and died on her door steps. About 30 people saw her and nobody called for help. It's a phenomena called, The Diffusion of Responsibility .. everyone thinks the other guy will call for help.

So if you're in trouble the best scenario is the fewer witness' the better. One or two is ideal.

Yes, was kitty genovese- sometime in the 1960's I believe. Event is often studied in college psych courses. Also in Queens by the way. As a longtime nyc resident, I don't think this would happen in Manhattan. People there are surprisingly (very surprisingly) helpful. The fact that he was homeless likely didn't help- as if one didn't witness the event or see blood, etc. (although sounds like it would have been evident) would think just another homeless guy sleeping (which is unfortunately a pretty common sight).

Just checked news report- was in Jamaica section of Queens-- this is a ghetto with the worst crime statistics in all the 5 boroughs.

Funny you should say that DD; that's the trouble with so many societies these days, the attitude is just self, self, self f** anybody else, rather like the a certain batch of arseholes who post on this board.

Queens Smeenz, it's all the USA, right Ms. Gordon?

Nice to meet you, Kikko, I'm Joe.

Sure, your dress has everything to do with it. A Brooks Brother's three-piece would have saved him.

Funny you should mention psychology. I learnt it in social psychology. In fact this event and the subsequent study gave birth to the science of social psychology.

Jeez, a public place in NYC. That narrows it down to about a million. New Yorkers are a tuff crowd. What would you expect .. Irish, Italian, Puerto Ricans, Jews, and our dark brothers aplenty.

99 percent of the world wouldn't waste the time going to a concert that was for violinists.

Surely the woman who had been helped, should have been the first to help, if not poor old Alfredo directly, then indirerectly by using a phone?

^ Dunno, not something I study, but strangely enough, it's not only in NYC. Likely if you fell over in the street in LA, they'd rob you first and then leave you to die.

Woman, 81, killed in street mugging 'ignored by passers-by as she called for help'

An 81-year-old widow who died after being mugged was ignored as she lay on the pavement pleading for help. Passers-by refused to stop and help Molly Morgan, thinking that she was drunk.

Oh, that was in London, UK.

Most people probably think he's a drunk or a junkie passed out on the street or a con-artist or even a mental health case and don't want anything to do with him. The person to blame is the woman to whose aid he allegedly came. Where did she go? He was stabbed right in front of her. Didn't she report the attack to the police? Condolences, but fuck him. He shouldn't have involved himself.

But then the altruistic stuff comes up as well. Plenty of those stories. Even in NYC.
