Massive Sinkhole Swallows Car In Richmond
RICHMOND, Calif. -- A massive 40-by-60-foot sinkhole opened up Thursday evening beneath a street in Richmond- that took out a section of roadway as well as a nearby parked car.
The 40-by-60-foot sinkhole opened up on Via Verdi where it intersects with El Portal Drive not far from I-80.
It was first reported to authorities at approximately 6:40 p.m., according to Richmond Police Lt. Dave Harris.
The sinkhole is 20-feet deep at its deepest point.
For most of the evening, dozens of firefighters, police officers, and engineers were on the scene.
The 2007 Mazda that fell into the sinkhole belonged to Maricica Koltun, an area resident who just moved into the adjacent apartment complex one month ago. “One of the children from the complex -- ‘cause I knew my car had been parked right there -- he said ‘Was your car a blue car?’” explained Koltun. “I was like ‘Yeah.’ He was like, ‘Oh man! I think it's your car.’ Of course at that moment, my heart just started pounding.'
At first, rescue personnel went in with harnesses and ropes to see if another car was underneath the Mazda.
A witness had reported seeing two cars fall in and there was concern that someone was trapped.
But in the end, they found only the one car and no one trapped or hurt.
So what could have caused such a major portion of the roadway, sidewalk, and hillside to give way?
Richmond Fire Chief Michael Banks outlined a possible scenario.“Basically what we see right now is there was a drainage culvert. And there may be a creek underground,” said Banks. “I'm not entirely sure. There are some creeks that wind their way through the Richmond-El Sobrante area out this way. But we've had a considerable amount of rain all winter long and into the spring. It just appeared in time the road gave way.”Via Verdi remained closed late Thursday night.
Friday morning, engineers will be back out to start figuring out the task of repairing the sink hole.
Crews also will bring in a crane to remove the car.
At that point, Koltun and her insurance company will be able to assess the damage.
