The twenty minute early morning chase started in the red light zone when Burgazzi refused to stop for plain clothes officers who flagged his vehicle for a spot check. The officers had observed the cleric driving slowly in the Valle Giulia, an area of Rome where prostitutes and transsexuals come together. Instead of obeying the officers, Burgazzi put the pedal to the metal and tried to flee the scene.

When the rogue priest was finally stopped he verbally threatened astonished officers: “You have no idea who I am. You don’t know who you are messing with,” and that was after he tried to drive his car at them.

The charges include wounding, resisting arrest and failing to produce documents for the car or to even identify himself when finally apprehended. That’s from a priest who worked at the Vatican’s State Department and serves as master of ceremonies at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Since it seems priest prefer ladyboys to real ladys, maybe the church should consider moving the Vatican from Rome to Bangkok. They would feel right at home here.

The harassment of a man simply out for an evening of victimless fun is the real tradgedy of this story. In America they have a new way of harassing "johns" : if you attempt to pick up a hooker in your car you are deemed to have used your car in the comission of a crime and it is civilly forfeited to the State. The fact he was a priest only makes it a little bit funny. Freedom is the real victim here.
