A BOY playing cops and robbers with a toy gun has been shot by a Los Angeles sheriff's deputy.
The boy was shot in the upper torso after reports that someone with a handgun was riding a bicycle in the suburb of Palmdale, The Los Angeles Times reports.

About 7.55pm yesterday (12.55pm AEST today), deputies spotted the boy ordered him to drop the gun, but instead he pointed it at them, police said.

"The deputies, fearing for their lives, shot him once," sheriff's spokesman Deputy Ed Hernandez said.

"Later on, they determined it was a juvenile playing cops and robbers."

Witnesses said the boy was about 15-years-old. He was taken to hospital and was in a stable condition.

Talk about a country living in fear, the police didn't even take the time to think and assess the situation.

Some examples of toy guns in available. If I was a cop and a 15 year old pointed one at me, likely would have shot him myself.

Gun control has nothing to do with murder rates and really guns do not mean high murder rates, in the link I am posting is a graph of murders in countrys and more murders are done without guns than with, and n/a countrys have a total gun control as Mexico has had since 1968, and I mean total, if you are stopped or at a border crossing into Mexico and they find an empty/fired 22 cartridge case they will impound and confiscate your car and put your ass in jail.

This is simply the natural selection process at work in Los Angeles County; some 15 year olds will point guns at the police and die, others will be more intelligent and will not. The latter group will survive and reproduce and the next generation will be more evolved.

Trigger happy rednecks, the cop knew that he had all right to shoot that kid so why wait. A surprise that he didn't empty the whole clip.

I have to agree with BF this time... I worked with US Police departments for over 20 years supplying products / services... Most line officers are ex-Military skinhead types with a superiority complex and a gun... Dangerous combination...

Plus, you can't slip them a few hundred baht to get off of a traffic violation... Just how civilized is that!!!

I gave up cops and robbers a hell of lot earlier than 15. Maybe he was like some of the posters here and he didn't think pointing what looked like a real gun would be a bad idea. Then again the kid might have been autistic, seems to fit more of the posters here with their constant hunt for hate America shit.

No, it's means he wasn't playing with a full bag of marbles, much like some of the posters here with their constant hate America BS.

I think any 15 year old who points a realistic looking copy pistol at police in LA isn't playing with a full bag of marbles.
I can't imagine he was playing cops and robbers.

blacks should all be shot according to the LA police department

    Not in Manchester.

Although I agree with the constitutional rights in the US, stuff like this is bound to happen. It does appear though that the police seem to shoot first and think later.

Was the boy pointing the gun at anyone or in a threatening way, or did the bobby just shoot regardless?

Trigger-Hapy yes, but consider the environment

Holy Cow! I agree - to a certain extent - with GangBang and Eli the Terminator.

Of course it is tragic that teh kid died and some cops in the US are prone to excessive violence, not sure abut them being triggerhappy, though, otherwise there would be many more dead littering the streets.

In situations like these the police don't have a lot of time to assess the situation and make value judgements one way or the other; a 15-year old (many 15-year olds look quite adult) points a gun at you in a crime-ridden city . . . what do you do?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but if the kid was black then the stress factor on the cop would have been even higher.

One thing, however, is that it is an indictment of the society when harmless games are punished with death.

Another example of a society living in fear. I don't think they should of shot the boy on instinct. Although, having said that if I had a gun pointed at me (even if it was fake), not sure if what I would do in that situation. Duck maybe, before shooting seems logical.

The Police did the right thing. Especially in LA County.

A 15 year old point a toy gun at a cop, is pointing a real gun at a cop.

A sure way to end up dead. Very stupid of the kid.
